ask stylebook: high school reunion?

Candace: My reunion is coming up next month! Help! I want to make a good impression at my high school reunion next month (I’m traveling back home) and I have no idea what to wear. There will be a cocktail reception and then a smaller group of us will go have drinks afterwards. I’m struggling between a dress that will look too much like a day dress and getting too fussy with a cocktail dress. What would you suggest?

Alicia, TulleBox: I too have a reunion this fall so I am on your page!

Without getting too complicated, I would suggest cocktail type pants and a great jacket or blouse. By wearing a loose fitting pant with a heel, you have bridged the gap between cocktail and casual, while acquiring assets in your closet for more than this one occasion.

If you feel you are more comfortable in a dress, I would advise a jersey dress that acts like a silk (since you’ll be traveling) and emphasize the shoe and perhaps a statement ring or bangle. The goal should be something comfortable without feeling overdone. Keep your hair and makeup polished and spend more time eating right (heavy on the salmon and leafy green veggies, forgo the wine and get your 7-8 hrs of sleep) and amping up your exercise routine before the actual weekend. This will give you that inner glow that can be your lasting impression. The attitude you go into this party with will far outshine what you wear. Have a great time and be thankful that everyone is your age for once!
