ask stylebook: gold cup?

Megg: What do I wear to Gold Cup? I need to find a hat!

Alicia, The Tulle Box: I have one client who uses my styling services solely for the Kentucky Derby and we always start with the hat!

There are many places to find a fabulous hat but if you want to stay local, consider popping into Tops of Old Town on Mt. Vernon Avenue. Willie May Mitchell and her daughter have a stunning array of hats and will be able to guide you through getting the “tilt” perfected. I would suggest complimenting your hair color with a statement hat. Trying on hats is a lot of fun – you’ll immediately know when a certain style is not working.

Hats have personality and should reflect who you are. Take a page from Harry Potter and let the right hat find you.

After you have found the hat, the dress should come next. I love a chic pantsuit (a la Amal Clooney), but not for Gold Cup; a dress is best. For some reason, I imagine wearing something filmy like chiffon that moves easily with a full skirt. One of my favorite Derby looks is the Duchess in an ivory suit which brings me to my next piece of advice… pay close attention to the weather! This ivory ensemble would be a disaster with rainy weather but on a perfect summer day, it’s picture perfect.

Lastly, if you are tailgating and walking in the grass, wedges are a must. A block heel could work too but only if the ground has been dry for a while.

Have a great time!
