ask stylebook: dull tweezers?

Traci: Why do my tweezers stop working after a while? Am I doing something wrong or do I just need to buy a new pair?

Elizabeth, Bellacara: Just like knives and scissors, tweezers go dull after a while, and more quickly with more frequent use, as one might expect. What I always tell clients is that if you have a special pair of tweezers that you know are amazing and you won’t be able to find again, it might be worth it to get them sharpened. Find someone who specializes in hair cutting shears, or ask at your salon when their shear sharpener will be in, and ask if he can accommodate that type of tool. It should be pretty cheap, and only take a couple minutes. Tweezerman even has a mail-in sharpening service for their products.

Honestly, though, if you’re not married to those tweezers, just buy a new pair. A good pair of tweezers should last you quite some time without dulling, anyway, so it’s a minor investment in knowing your tools are going to work for you. Happy tweezing!
