ask stylebook: attire for a winter wedding?

Katie: What in the world do you wear to a winter wedding?

Cathy, Style Speaks: Great question! Getting dressed up in the winter is always trickier. Luckily, I’ve been to my fair share of winter weddings as well as helped clients figure out what to wear. And, as someone who’s always cold, I refuse to just grin and bear it for the sake of looking good. Here’s what I’ve found works best.

Winter

Option one is to go long: even if it’s not a black tie wedding, wear a long dress or skirt such as a printed piece in a flowy fabric that doesn’t feel too over the top (layer tights or leggings underneath if you want the added warmth – no one will see!).

Option two is to wear a knee length dress that you can pair with black tights; go for heavier weight fabrics in deep winter colors. Bonus points if you can find a great dress with sleeves! Accessorize with closed toe heels or a heel with a subtle peep toe is appropriate as well (just make sure to wear seamless tights if pairing with a peep toe).

And, be sure to top everything off with appropriate outerwear. There’s nothing worse than getting all dressed up and then throwing a parka over your carefully put together look. For a knee length dress, top it off with a tie-waist knee length wool coat and if you go long, add a waist length topper such as a leather jacket. Add a scarf that can double as a wrap once you’re inside the event.
