7 non-essentials (that will fit right in)

A couple weeks ago, I wrote about the seven skincare and makeup pieces every woman should have in her beauty wardrobe. But today, let’s add another layer. These are seven non-essential skincare and makeup pieces that will fit right into your current seven-piece wardrobe, as useful and fun additions to your current regimen. These are the secondary colors to the other article’s primary, if you will.

1. Your perfect blush. This blush should look like your natural flush. Whether it’s a peachy glow, a pop of pink, or a nearly bronze swipe across your cheekbones, this non-essential essential should look like you just went for a light jog, or heard an inappropriate joke (at which you are, of course, trying not to laugh).

2. A quality foundation. This can be any formula, from tinted moisturizer to long-wearing full coverage. As long as it evens out your skin tone and matches your skin color, go for it. (With proper tools, of course! We all know I do love a good beautyblender.)

3. An eye base. This will make a blank canvas of your eyelid. This is different from a normal under eye concealer, because it dries completely, unlike a concealer, which will often maintain a small bit of emollience. An eye primer will increase the wear time of a powder shadow, and make the color more intense.

4. A signature scent. This is pretty self-explanatory. Some people prefer to switch scents when the weather gets warmer or cooler, others choose to wear the same all year. If you try a fragrance, and every time you get a whiff of it are filled with happiness, or think “Oh my goodness, that person smells so good…oh wait, that’s me!” you’re on the right track.

5. A skin type-correct facial cleanser. The same way your moisturizer and serum should go with your skin type, your cleanser should also. If you have skin that’s oily and prone to breakouts and clogged pores, why would you use a creamy, milky cleanser? If your skin is dry or dehydrated, why would you use a purifying gel cleanser that might strip all your natural oils? Cleansers are different for a reason. Use one that will do something for you!

6. A flesh-toned eyeliner. All of us here at Bellacara talk about a brightening pencil like this with some regularity. A beige-y pencil can be used on the waterline to make your eyes look more open and bright, under your eyebrow to add a little extra definition, or even on a particularly stubborn blemish that needs a little extra concealment. This is a great little MacGyver product to have in your makeup bag!

7. A do-it-all hairspray. A light-medium hold hairspray can be used on the root as you’re blowing out your hair or backcombing for volume, spritzed on flyaway pieces, shellacked onto a last-minute updo for your cousin’s wedding that you woke up too late to do your hair for…possibilities are, well, not endless, but pretty close.

As ever, whatever you wear, and however you wear it…have FUN!
