4 Steps To Curling with a Flat Iron

Last week we covered my favorite way to wear smoothed, straightened hair. Today, curling! There are actually a few ways to curl with a flat iron, so in the interest of simplicity, I’ll cover just my favorite: the beachy wave.

If you have never done this before, or if you are trying it again after a long time, it is a good idea to practice the motion with a cold iron first, to make sure you have it down pat before you start curling.

Step One: Spray dry hair all over with Living Proof Restore Instant Protection, then lightly brush or comb through to evenly distribute. Section your hair the way you did for flat ironing, with a small section ready to curl at the nape.

Step Two: Take your T3 SinglePass Luxe or SinglePass Compact and hold it vertically, paddles pointing upward. Clamp a small section with the iron, make one half-turn, and pull down and slightly away from the head. This should be an easy movement, and does not require changing of hands. The hair should not be fully wrapped around the iron, just the backside of one paddle.

Step Three: Finish curling that section, and follow up with a flexible hold hairspray, like Bumble and Bumble Spray de Mode. Continue all the way around the head. You can alternate directions of the curl for a little more intentional messiness, but the couple sections closest to the face should definitely be curled away from the face. (Think of old-school Farrah Fawcett, if you’re confused about which way to go.)

Step Four: Backcomb a little at the crown if you need it, and finish the look by spraying all over with Moroccan Oil Dry Texture Spray. Shake it out and tousle with your fingers, and you’re ready to roll!
