why not wear it again?

I did something revolutionary this week. Ok, maybe it wasn’t revolutionary, but it was definitely out of my comfort zone. I wore the same exact thing — two days in a row.

I work with clients every day to pare down their wardrobes, simplify their lives and discover their personal style. Although I have clients who love fashion and everything a giant walk-in closet has to offer, most of the time if someone calls me, they want out. Their closets have become unmanageable and they are stressed out on a daily basis trying to figure out what to wear. It’s called “Too Many Options, Too Little Time” syndrome.

Enter your friendly neighborhood wardrobe pro. I get rid of what is no longer working, keep what does, and recommend only essential pieces that add value to your wardrobe. I shop your closet, creating outfits out of what you already own.

But what about my own closet? Do I follow my own rules? I do. Mostly. I still own a lot of clothing. And shoes. I do purge once a year. I organize my very small closet (gotta love 100-year-old Tudor homes) the same way I organize my clients’ closets. And, I keep it organized.

What I don’t do is wear things over and over again. I do mix and match, but I wouldn’t be caught dead wearing the same thing within the same week or even two weeks…until now.

The Internet is littered with articles about French style vs. American style. I roll my eyes at many of the generalizations about women from these two cultures and how they approach fashion — usually because they are disparaging to American women. However, I recently read an article about French shopping habits vs American shopping habits, which really resonated. One of the key points is the attitude/belief American women hold near and dear: that you can’t wear the same thing twice. French women, on the other hand, wear something that looks and feels great one day and think to themselves, “I think I’ll wear that again tomorrow.”

Confession time. The American way? That’s ME.

This summer my family is embarking on a major home renovation. It is something we budgeted and planned for — and it doesn’t include keeping intact my seasonal shoe budget. I decided this year I was going to attempt to think French. This involved a spending freeze, forcing me to rethink and be creative about items in my closet.

I wore this dress to several client appointments one day, including a major closet audit with my lovely client and her bags of clothing pictured above. It was comfortable. Linen. Fit nicely, but allowed me to move. My shoes are Freda Salvador (a line I hear might soon be carried at The Shoe Hive). Equally comfortable. I felt fantastic in this outfit. It’s what I like — mixing feminine and masculine elements. I felt pretty and a little edgy all at the same time. I didn’t spill anything on it. I didn’t sweat profusely.

So I pretended I was French. I wore it again the next day. The feeling on the second day? You guessed it – comfortable and pretty. Revolutionary.

Love this! I regularly rewear outfits days in a row if I know I’ll see different people. The older I get, the smaller my closet because I don’t want to spend so much time figuring out outfits. If the basics are good, I don’t feel weird wearing and rewearing, and my accessories collection helps make things looks different too!

  2. I totally do this all the time! Having a job where I see different people different days of the week helps and it makes life soo much easier.
