what to wear: coastal casual

Sun, sand, and a drink in your hand. Now doesn’t that sound like heaven? With summer on its way we are looking forward to indulging in all of these things. When the temps rise here in Alexandria, it is almost obligatory that you have to make at least one beach getaway. One thing we love about getting away is that things are easy. All worries, to-do lists and stresses are left at home and all that we have to plan for is which direction our beach chairs will face when we get to the ocean. That is how vacations should be, absolutely carefree and the way you dress should reflect just that.

Relaxing with a good book and a cold beverage are the type of things that we look forward to on beach vacations. We aren’t worrying about what we will wear or what our hair looks like. The best part is that you can just throw on your swimsuit, a great cover up and a fedora and you are beach glam. Of course we pack a few other items as well but the emphasis is on comfort and on being extremely casual.

The look we styled on Sarah Phillips of local life and style blog, Fifty-Two Thursdays, reflects the laid-back vacation vibes we were speaking of previously. This is a look that you could easily wear over your suit to the beach and then throw on the denim shirt to head to dinner. The palm printed silk pants are thin and extremely lightweight which make for the perfect summer pant and the muscle-tee is a no brainer and goes with absolutely everything.

Sarah does her fair share of traveling so we asked her to share a few of her tips on what she packs for a beach getaway. “I love to travel but I actually hate packing! I end up packing at the last possible minute but since I have been traveling so frequently, I have it down to a science. I never check luggage when I travel, so I make sure I pack only the essentials that will fit in my carry-on. When headed somewhere warm, I make sure to pack a few bathing suits, a pair of sandals, wedges, a maxi dress, shorts, a few muscle tanks, denim shirt and a pair of linen or silk pants (like the ones I am wearing in the photos- so comfy!). I also pack a few pieces of versatile jewelry that I can wear with practically everything. That is really all you need. Everything you pack should be able to be worn interchangeably and the best part is that you are on vacation, so you shouldn’t stress about what you are wearing. It’s a time to unwind and relax!”
