How To Wear Denim Shoes

Yesterday morning a customer was enthralled with a pair of denim sandals in our store (the amazing ones in the first look below) but wasn’t quite sure how she would wear them. Since the denim shoe trend is everywhere and you may have the same question, we’ve styled some looks to make the trend feel more accessible.

Often when someone asks me what to wear something with, I enthusiastically respond, “Everything!” And while I do mean it, I also realize perhaps not everyone is as willing to take the style risks that I am! So I then try to break down what I mean by “everything,” usually suggesting they wear start with skinny jeans and a blazer. (Elizabeth’s go-to advice is boyfriend jeans and a t-shirt, while Katie often suggests white jeans and a denim jacket.)

In the case of denim shoes, however, you really can wear them with everything. You might not wear every denim shoe with everything, but there is an appropriate denim shoe for every outfit. It will just take some figuring out to determine which is the right denim shoe for you and your wardrobe.

Here are five looks I pulled together with our top five favorite denim shoes. Want to see how denim shoes can work in your wardrobe? Please feel free to reach out to me with your questions, or we can set up a time before the stores open or after they closer to work through a specific shopping need.

Denim Sandals with a White Dress

This is a perfectly updated take on the return of ’70s style — an elegantly bohemian Ulla Johnson dress with block-heeled Stuart Weitzman sandals. As I told my customer yesterday morning, these will also work with denim, skirts, a pair of shorts (in an appropriate length), and just about everything else in her closet.

Denim Sneakers with Loungewear

This spring, denim is seen on both dressy and casual shoe styles. We couldn’t pass up a denim slip-on sneaker with an avocado embroidered on it by Soludos! Pair it with equally casual pieces in complementary cool tones. Here, we’re showing a Sundry baseball tee and Xirena drawstring pants.

Denim Espadrilles with a Maxi Dress

This is how I want to dress all summer long — an Ulla Johnson breezy, no-fuss dress that will keep me cool and a denim espadrille by Soludos that I can walk in all day long while soaking in every minute of sunshine!

Denim Flat-forms with More Denim

These flat-forms by Stuart Weitzman might be my favorite shoes in the store right now. I used them to demonstrate that you can wear denim shoes with denim as long as the two shades of denim are different. Here, our model is dressed in an Ulla Johnson blouse and Mother jeans.

Denim Wrap-Around Espadrilles with a Short Dress

These wrap-around espadrilles by Soludos are probably the hardest to style of the group. I recommend wearing them with something that hits just above the ankles or well above the knees to visually lengthen your legs. This Ulla Johnson dress is a perfect match!

In short, you really can wear denim shoes with everything, just like you wear jeans or a denim jacket. That’s the beauty of denim — it translates to so many different looks and can serve so many different purposes!
