uniform: part two

I have never been much of a makeup person. Even though growing up my grandmother used to say she was going to “put her face on,” and even though I spent hours watching my mom at the Merle Norman store in Columbus, I was never really taught how to “put it on.” But still, if I close my eyes, I can still remember the smell of my mother’s Merle Norman foundation.

Luckily, I moved to Old Town about the same time Bellacara opened on King Street and the women there have helped guide me through the years. I am a “less is more” person and they have helped develop what I would call my makeup “uniform.” Here it is, and if you have any suggestions, let me know. If you want suggestions, take a minute and stop by Bellacara.

Moisturizer: Clarins Multi Active Day Correction Cream Moisturizer
I can say this is the one thing I never leave the house without.

Tinted Moisturizer: Jouer Luminizing Tinted Moisturizer
If you told me I could only have one product, it would be this Jouer tinted moisturizer. The best!

Mascara: Kevyn Aucoin The Mascara – Volume
I have always thought mascara makes the biggest difference. After trying many different brands I will never stray from Kevyn Aucoin. Never clumps and comes off easily.

Lips: Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment
I’m pretty sure I have every tint ever made.

The Extras:
So every once in a while I try to do a little extra and this is what I add in to my routine. I I am trying to turn it up a notch, I turn to Smashbox.

Primer: Smashbox Photo Finish Light
I would never put on foundation without this. I can’t explain it but it makes such a difference for me!

Foundation: Smashbox High Definition Healthy FX Foundation
Since I don’t wear makeup, I never thought I would wear foundation but this is lightweight and never greasy.

Eyeliner: Jet Set Waterproof Eye Liner
I have never been able to use a pencil eyeliner. To me, it is just easier to do it with a brush. This is the one I find the easiest to use and that is saying something.

what purpose does the primer, photo finish light serve? Is this something to replace a moisturizer?

    • I never really understood the point of primers. In the past, I just thought they made my skin look oily and since I don’t wear makeup much it always felt to heavy.

Once I found the one that worked right for me, I got it.

For me at least, the primer helps the foundation go on more smoothly. Similar to priming your walls for paint. I am 40 so I have lots of fine lines and my skin tends to be dry in spots. This helps even out my fine lines, redness and my dryness so the foundation goes on evenly and smoothly. I think it helps my foundation stay put as well.

I would say if you are in your 20s you probably don’t need it.

I too remember the smell of my mother’s Merle Norman foundation! Brings back a lot of memories and fun times playing with her makeup. Thanks for the reminder 🙂
