Back to School in Style: The Top 5 Fall Trends for Kids

I know it doesn’t seem like it with this crazy heat we’ve been having, but fall is right around the corner! There is so much I love about fall, football, pumpkin spice everything, and especially fall fashion for my boys! They’ve hung out all summer in their Mini Boden baggies and Vineyard Vines tees! Although I love that look, it’s time to refresh their wardrobe for fall.

Don’t worry, this post isn’t going to be all about boy fashion. As you know if you’ve shopped in my store, it’s very girl-centric. It’s the nature of the beast, right? Girls have more to choose from. I’m super excited because this fall I get to shop for my niece that will be arriving mid November! So whether you’re shopping for your little guys, your little girls, or that special niece or nephew, I’m going to help you narrow it down with my top five favorite fall trends.

1. Animal graphics

These whimsical graphics are everywhere for fall. As much as I do love an all over animal print, these fun-loving hedgehogs, fox, dogs, or even raccoons are stealing hearts! Mini Boden, Crew Cuts, Tea Collection, and Hanna Andersson have this trend covered.

2. Distressed denim

Denim is always in style for fall, but this year I am loving all of the fray, rips, and faded treatments. Distressed denim works with boots or sneakers and your favorite tee…instant rockstar at the playground. Shop Crew Cuts, Seven for all Mankind, and Gap for this fun trend!

3. Updated classic shoes

Mary Janes and sneakers are great addition to any fall wardrobe. This year we are seeing glitter, metallics, and studs! Yes, you heard me correctly: sneakers with glitter and metallic…even for the boys! Adidas uses a lot of metallic trim for boys; I love glitter sneakers from Plae for the little gals. Even Hunter is getting in on the action with red sparkle boots!

4. Sweatshirt dresses

This is one of my personal favorites. This trend is cozy yet chic, and you can dress it up or down with boots, sneakers, or glitter flats. Add a statement necklace and you’re all set!

5. Knit cardigans

Fall is all about the layers! For boys and girls, you can add a splash of color to any outfit with a fun, bright-colored cardi from Crew Cuts, Mini Boden, or Hanna Andersson. Perfect for chilly mornings at the bus stop.

Of course I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that all of these trends can be found at my fabulous little boutique, 529 Kids Consign, nestled in the heart of our amazing Old Town, Alexandria! #lovelocalOT ❤️

  • The latest from Megan
Megan’s career in retail/merchandising began in the mid nineties standing in front of a woodsy smelling Abercrombie and Fitch. Sporting an oversized plaid flannel and bootcut jeans she said hello to every customer that eagerly walked in to the popular retailer. Little did Megan know that, while creating a perfect “denim wall”and dressing in all of the latest fashion that the lifestyle brand offered she was building the foundation for her fun and exciting career! After graduating from the University of Pittsburgh, Megan managed multiple A&F stores before she moved on to an assistant buyer position in contemporary dresses at the local Arlington based retailer Hecht’s (now Macy’s). She gained an immeasurable amount of knowledge before moving onto a different facet of the business at Calvin Klein Jeans. Megan worked her way from retail coordinator to East-Coast regional manager helping to create the Calvin Klein aesthetic in department stores from Boston to Miami. After her first son Ethan was born, her position at CKJ was eliminated, due to the harsh economic conditions at the time. This is how 529 was born! Megan quickly began to see how fast Ethan was growing out of his clothing. She knew other moms had the same amount of adorable “gently-worn” clothing piling up. Combining her love of retail and her obsession with dressing Ethan gave her the idea to try and sell this clothing. 529 became a popular “pop-up” shop in the Alexandria area and once the following was big enough, a brick and mortar store in historic Old Town. 529 Kids Consign exemplifies who Megan is and what she has learned throughout her career. It’s a warm, well-organized, well- edited boutique that attracts moms from all over the DC metro area. On any given visit to the store you may be greeted by three boys dressed to the nines..they too have the passion.

We are an upscale children's and maternity consignment boutique specializing in the latest trends. Quality is important to us, which is why we are particular about our brands. Offering not only consignment items but also the freshest and most trendy must haves for hip moms and cool kids makes us the place to shop!
