How These 5 Sleep Mistakes are Impeding Your Goals

Did you ever think a strength and conditioning coach would tell you that your nighttime tea may be more important to your physique and well-being than your morning workout? Well, if you are sleep deprived, like many of my readers, it is precisely what I’d say.

Over the past 6 years I have uncovered stories of hundreds of women with whom I’ve met who fail to recognize how their sleep habits are leading them on an upward spiral in terms of their weight and waistlines and a downward spiral for their self-confidence and worth. Don’t let this be you.

Come to my virtual sleep seminar April 27 to learn much more about how you can change your poor sleep habits and feel better. Meet me on Zoom. See details here.

Sleep is yet another reason why I quit (just) being a personal trainer. You can jump 1,000 jumps, run 1,000 miles, and crunch 1,000 crunches each day. If you don’t sleep, all of that work will only turn your weight loss goals into weight gain and fat accumulation.

Like I tell my concierge and corporate clients, sleep is the most important appointment you have each day. It is more important than your CEO, boss, your kids’ teacher, your client…all of them. None other is more important.

Adequate and quality sleep is responsible for your productivity, your hunger and cravings, and truly your overall health. Not only is it when you cycle through several stages of sleep, each with distinct qualities and purpose, it is when you’re repairing and recovering. Some scientists even say our sleep is a predictor of general intelligence.

Cheat it and it will cheat you of a whole lot of contentedness.

The top mistakes many women make are listed below. Take heed, dear reader. The benefit of getting consistent, adequate, and quality sleep are worth the sacrifice of the latest show on Hulu. You will:

  • • Be more productive in daily life
  • • Lose weight
  • • Boost your immune system
  • • Build confidence
  • • Increase your cognitive function
  • • Recover (or prevent) injury
  • • Avoid cravings
  • • Boost your metabolism
  • • Be less reactive and more responsive

Anyone who knows me, especially my clients, will tell you I am passionate about sleep. I am passionate about my own, my childrens’, and my beloved clients’ sleep. The better the sleep = the more fit, well, confident, and healthy you will be. Sleep health speaks volumes when I first meet new clients.

Years ago scientists did a study of mice to see how long they would live without sleep. 30 days. After depriving them of sleep for 30 days, they died. You get my plea and my point: get your sleep, ladies!

The mistakes you make with regard to your sleep will have a lasting impact not only on your waistline, yet on the quality of your life. The common mistakes are below. I have omitted the solutions so you will definitely want to come to my groundbreaking workshop on how you can get sleep for weight loss.

  • • Your (mystery) sickness: Come to my workshop to learn simple ways to mitigate this huge issue for many of you.
  • • Over “caffeine”: Learn at my workshop about why your stop at Starbucks in the afternoon is wreaking havoc on your sleep.
  • • Your screen time: Blue light, or the type of light emanating from a computer, TV, or cell phone, can have negative and inhibitory effect on sleep onset and quality. It tells our brains that it is still daytime, when in fact it is night and dark outside. Blue light decreases your melantonin. Not good, huh? Learn ways to fix your iPhone, IG, late-night Netflix addiction, and get sleep at my workshop.
  • • No bedtime routine: On some nights do you watch a little news and others scrolls through Facebook later than you’d like? Learn about how no routine = disaster for your sleep.
  • • Your bedroom is not set up for sleep: If we make our sleep our most important meeting of the day, we would want to make sure the setting or environment is set for sleep and little more. I can show you how!

If you’re interested in learning more about how you can improve your sleep to achieve optimal wellness, don’t miss out on my groundbreaking Sleep Workshop.

After spending 15 years developing her own personal definition of wellness and watching thousands struggle with theirs, in January 2019 Adrien founded Alexandria Wellness, the home for the Concierge Wellness Program and Corporate Wellness with Adrien Cotton. Over the course of 15 years, “FOR” was home to more than 2,000 clients, 30 instructors, and hundreds of inspirational success stories. Adrien is now, more-than-ever, passionate about helping women view their fitness as a journey, not a quick fix. Adrien’s recipe for success herself has evolved from a rigid training plan of sweaty and heart pumping workouts to some days getting in her 10,000 steps, consciously breathing, her 7.5 hours of sleep, and her beloved 5-Minute Flow. Adrien believes the most important ingredient is making small changes for big results, even if it’s one new habit formed each month. Still passionate about fitness, Adrien’s clients appreciate her ability to make sessions seriously challenging without a “beat down,” a healthy mix of strength and metabolic (cardio) work and ultimately helping her clients gain real strength in mind and body. She believes we all benefit from being curious about our bodies and that change, or improvement, is within reach despite what your “inner voice” or others may tell you. Adrien is bubbling with excitement to help women learn the importance of a comprehensive approach to wellness, weight loss, and contentedness with yourself, and that every person has the right to feel good about themselves. Most days, you can find her helping clients with their wellness, listening to success stories, and bragging about her twin 13-year-old children and “fittest man in Alexandria” Bill Cotton. Adrien prides herself on her practice of mindfulness, meditation, and putting it all into perspective.
