Tell me if this sounds familiar: You’ve decided it’s time to focus on your health and fitness. You join a gym or maybe you feel you need something more personal or a change of pace and you sign up for CrossFit, Barre, Orangetheory, SoulCycle or some other type of fitness establishment. Everything’s going great, you go to the gym or studio pretty regularly for a couple of months and you even start seeing some results. Then things start to fade. Instead of going four times a week, you’re down to one or two, your schedule dictates if you go or not, you start getting a little bored, and maybe you get injured and as it always happens…you find reasons to skip workouts.
This is the never ending start/stop cycle of exercise. The fact of the matter is it isn’t easy. It takes work, dedication, accountability, and, in large part, a level of expertise to keep on going. If this sounds familiar, maybe it’s time you try a new approach and get some one-on-one help from an expert.
How about this? You have a heart problem, you seek the help of a cardiologist. You have a legal issue, you check in with your lawyer. So, now, you want to get stronger, more fit, and, frankly, just healthier. Why aren’t you seeing an expert in this, a personal trainer?
I know. This sounds incredibly self-serving – a personal trainer suggesting you should work with a fitness professional to get and stay healthy. To some degree you’re right. But just like you, we know from experience, it’s very hard to maintain a healthy lifestyle without help. Many of us (or at least the good ones) have our own coaches, not just to continue learning, but also to help us keep us motivated, injury-free, and healthy. At Fitness on the Run, we believe another set of eyes isn’t just an option; its non-negotiable, even for us trainers.
With all that said, here are my top three reasons you should consider working with a personal trainer:
Your experience, goals, fitness level, previous or current injuries, likes and dislikes are not the same as a friend you may workout with or the people with whom you share a class. A trainer will create a plan that is specific to YOU and YOUR wants and needs. And with a personal level of attention also comes a watchful eye to prevent injury. You are more likely to maintain the habit and see results with a program that’s built just for YOU.
We all know how easy to skip a workout here and there when other life “priorities” pop up. The concept of doing fewer things to get great at things is not just a saying: getting and maintaining serious fitness takes focus. A trainer will be your biggest fan in the gym. They’ll be there waiting for you when you walk in and will be disappointed if you don’t show up. A great trainer will hold you accountable for the goals you’ve set, as well as the fitness and nutrition steps required to achieve them. They will even go that extra step and text or call you to check-in on how you’re doing if you miss a workout or two.
One reason many stop exercising is boredom. It’s hard to justify going to the gym when you know you’re going to be doing the same work out over and over. A good personal trainer will mix it up; they will keep things fresh to ensure you’re on track to reaching your ultimate goals.
