three easy ways to shop your closet this fall

One of our most popular services with our clients is the Shop Your Closet. This is when we take what is in our clients’ closets and rework, reinvent…restyle.  We create looks based on what a client already has – no new shopping. Now that the temperature has officially dropped, here are a few easy ways to mix, match, and restyle what you already own.

Mix pattern and texture
The beauty of fall is the rich color, pattern, and texture of cold-weather clothing. Try wearing that nubby, chunky cardigan with a silk sleeveless top, pair your plaids with your stripes, or work that animal print dress with a classic boucle blazer.

The easiest way to mix patterns in a cohesive, purposeful way is to select colors that go together. In other words, find a common color in the two patterns. Then mix a bolder print with a smaller, more subdued print/texture. Finally, stick with two patterns/textures and add a solid color to anchor your look. For example, windowpane trousers with stripe top and a solid blazer to ground the look.

Layer, layer, layer
It’s layering season – no easier way to stay cozy and stylish. Try layering in unexpected ways: a tissue turtleneck under a silk slip dress, a white collared shirt under a flow-y dress, a tissue turtleneck under a ruffled blouse. The key is that the look doesn’t feel accidental. Some fabrics still belong solely in warm weather. For example, don’t do your linen jacket with a turtleneck sweater, or your cotton floral dress with a tissue turtleneck.

Roll and cuff
Sometimes just re-styling existing pieces makes it look and feel different. I have talked about how to roll your jeans, cuff your blazer jackets and more. This season, try a large cuff on your straight-leg jeans to give them a fun, funky flair (wear with no-sock socks and always show a sliver of ankle), or push your blazer jacket sleeves up, exposing a long/sleeve t-shirt underneath for a play on proportions.
