the art of mixing metals

Myth: You can’t mix silver and gold. FALSE!

Like many things in fashion, mixing silver and gold is all about finding the right balance. Don’t overwhelm the senses with a silver frock, gold pumps and a bronze clutch. Accent the garment with the same shade in the opposite color. Same goes for jewelry—keep the temperature of each metallic similar—you want each piece to look like they could all be cast in the same movie—i.e. don’t pair a conservative top with boho pants.

Another way to successfully mix metals is pairing a neutral garment with gold and silver accents.

Another thing to keep in mind, when we say “mix and match,” don’t read too much into the “match” part, as it can look too—well, matchy. For example, if the buckle on your chunky boots is gold, that doesn’t mean you have to limit yourself to a gold clutch. Would you match your toenail polish with your lipstick, with your bag…? No. If you have to over think the mixing, it will come across as too thought out—or too “matchy.”

If you are uneasy about mixing silver and gold, don’t fret. Start with something easy: leave the mixing up to the professionals. A lot of your favorite designers pre-mix their garments or products for you, eliminating the guesswork.
