Small Business Feature: Sugarcoated Bakery

Sugarcoated Bakery is a home-based bakery in Alexandria, Virginia. They offer a variety of baked goods, including decorated cakes and cookies, plus hot cocoa bombs. The owner and baker, Amalea, also offers cake and cookie decorating classes.

“I Sugarcoat Everything! Hi, I’m Amalea! Originally from the south, I moved to the D.C. area to get a Master’s in Public Policy at UMD (go Terps!). After 15 years in the nonprofit sector, I decided to pursue my passion for baking. Whether it’s whipping up muffins for my kids, or a custom cake for a customer, you can usually find me in the kitchen. Otherwise, I’m probably reading, enjoying the outdoors, or spending time with my family. Baking brings me so much joy and the opportunity to share in your special moments makes me smile. “I was introduced to Amalea’s bakery in December when I ordered a Christmas Eve cookie box for my three boys. Amalea included a letter from Santa, Christmas pencils, a cookie decorating kit, hot chocolate bombs, and a coloring page for Santa cookies. It was thoughtfully curated and executed.
