Street Style: Ann Loughlin

Alexandria Bar Association Executive Director Ann Loughlin has incredible style. This is not only due to the fact that she is a dedicated local shopper, although that is obviously a part of it. Ann’s style is especially noteworthy because it is so seamlessly enhanced by her smile, compassion, and amazing love for all things Alexandria. In addition to shopping local, she supports nonprofits in her spare time and cares about the Alexandria community so much that she always goes above and beyond the community-caring that is already built into her day job. Somehow, she finds the time to do it all and look stylish while doing it!

Ann is instrumental in making sure the Alexandria Bar’s Lawyer Referral Program runs smoothly. The referral service, available both online and at the courthouse, pairs persons looking for legal services with an attorney in the Alexandria area who practices that type of law and arranges a reduced-rate 30-minute consultation. It is an invaluable service that helps Alexandrians from all walks of life with legal questions. Ann shines because she does this service with a smile on her face, with a passion behind it, and with a rare ability to make anyone’s day brighter just by getting to work with her.

ABOUT YOU

How do you spend your time? As the Executive Director of the Alexandria Bar Association, I am fortunate to spend time with many lawyers and judges here in Alexandria who make this a wonderful place to practice law. The best part of my job is the Lawyer Referral Service. Through this program, I connect members of the community with lawyers who can help them solve their legal challenges. I love being able to match people in need of legal help with an attorney who can help them with their problems. It is a public service that I enjoy giving my time to and it really benefits our community. In addition to my work, my husband and I spend time with our three children going to and from all of their activities. I also play tennis and hang out with our dog, Brady.
Neighborhood: Malvern Hill
How long have you lived in Alexandria: My whole life
What brought you to Alexandria? I grew up down the Parkway so my version of “moving away from home” was to cross over from Fairfax County into the City of Alexandria.
What would surprise people about you? I’m actually kind of shy. And, I love to paint. I like to paint walls, furniture, pictures.
You’re a superhero: what’s your superpower? Time travel. There are so many moments in history that I would love to live in for a few hours or a few days.
Favorite cocktail: I’m a chardonnay girl.
Last book read or movie seen: I’m reading Katherine Graham’s autobiography because after seeing The Post I wanted to learn more about her. I also saw Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, which is a dark and disturbing tale laced with moments of kindness and forgiveness that are so touching.
Guilty pleasure: Manicures especially gel manicures
Phrase you overuse: “This is the best thing I’ve ever tasted.” My kids make fun of me relentlessly for saying this all the time!
Facebook or Instagram? Facebook
Latest binge-watch: The Crown on Netflix
Bucket list travel destination: Nashville. I love country music and I really want to go to Nashville and visit some of the famous venues where the stars get their start. I also want to go to the Maldives and stay in one of those huts that is built right over the water.
If you only could have one for the rest of your life: wine or coffee? Wine

FASHION

Define your style in three words or less: Stepped-up casual
The go-to piece in your wardrobe: A navy jumpsuit from TSALT. It stands all on its own at a dressy event or I can dress it down with a denim jacket.
Favorite trend ever: Fringe. I love it. Can’t get enough of it on my clothes, shoes, bags…absolutely love it.
Favorite current trend: Color. I love all the color in the spring fashions. I especially love the robin’s egg blue color of the suit I’m wearing for this photoshoot. This blue makes me so happy!
Beauty product you can’t live without: Smashbox Photo Finish Lash Primer from Bellacara. It makes my eyelashes look twice as long.
Favorite fragrance: Jo Malone French Lime Blossom
Heels or flats? Heels

HOME

Favorite room in your home: My kitchen. I love to cook and have people in the kitchen with me. It is open and bright. People say that they love sitting around our kitchen table and I love having them there.
Antiques, modern, or a mix? A mix
Last item bought for your home: A chest of drawers from Coco Blanca.
Next planned purchase: Gas fireplaces for my living room and family room.
Favorite way to entertain: Casually. Spontaneous get-togethers are always fun. It is also great to have people over for dinner where we can all relax and unwind. I’m Italian so we also do a lot of pasta dinners with family.
Clutter-free or well-lived in? In my mind, I live clutter-free, the execution, however, is way more well-lived in.
Wallpaper — yes, totally modern or no, so dated: Yes, totally modern.

FITNESS

Your go-to work-out: I work-out with a personal trainer and a friend once a week. Our trainer is sports obsessed so we talk about the Redskins a lot and she keeps me up to speed on the Wizards.
Most fun way to exercise: With my trainer and friends.
Group exercise or solo: Group. I play tennis a few times a week with friends.
Fitness goal: Umm… to have a fitness goal? I like being active and outdoors. I like walking, hiking, playing tennis and swimming. I even like running on the treadmill. But, I don’t have a desire to run a marathon. I just want to be fit and keep moving.
Haven’t yet, but might be willing to try with coaching / encouragement: Still thinking on that one. 🙂
Proudest fitness achievement: I won a stair climbing content when I worked at the White House. It was on an elliptical. I’ve also survived some pretty long tennis matches in some intense heat. Maybe that should be my fitness goal – to win my matches in two sets and get off the court!

ALEXANDRIA

Favorite spot in Alexandria: It is so hard to choose. I love Old Town and Del Ray. I also love walking my dog in the woods near my house. You feel like you’re out on a mountain trail.
Last purchase in Alexandria: Pearl studded wedges from the Shoe Hive and two cute pairs of pants from TSalt.
Best coffee: Misha’s
/ happy hour: Hummingbirds. I’m looking forward to some warm spring weather there.
/ date night spot: Kaizen. My husband and I love their sushi and the little tacos.
Favorite charity: Beat The Odds. It is an organization that awards scholarships to high school students who literally beat the odds – homelessness, loss of a parent, parents with mental health or addiction issues. Their stories are so inspiring.
Favorite annual Alexandria event: The Little Theater event when the Alexandria Bar Association raises money for Beat The Odds. This year, the play was Anne of Green Gables. It was fantastic! There is so much talent right here in Alexandria!
