Street Style: Amy Conway Hatcher

The amazing, brilliant, hysterically funny, and caring Amy Hatcher raises the intelligence and levity in any room. Amy was referred to Fitness on the Run (FOR) by our mutual friend (also lovely and super smart) Ann Bartlett of Body in Balance Center several years ago. We’d talk over the phone about client stuff like billing, scheduling, and some topical “life stuff.” Over the past year, I’ve had the pleasure of working with Amy one-on-one. It has been an amazing ride…and gets better every day.

One of the smartest people I know (and I know a lot!), Amy is humble about her professional success as an attorney. A former federal prosecutor, she has seen a lot, yet she still manages to make laughter a priority in her life.

Her marriage to the love-of-her-life Sid, her relationship with her two beautiful children, and her two dogs Rabun and Bella visibly bring her joy. She lights up when she is with them or even just talking about them. She also finds time to hang with her friends and talks with them often about how to “be the village” for each other.

Amy even found time this year to start a new program at her children’s school. The program involved frequent meetings with the Head of the School, collaborating with a group of more than 20 parents, and organizing their students, who eventually competed against other area schools in a tournament. It involved a bit of creativity and engineering from both children and parents alike. It was no small task and one she shared with a handful of other parents. And, of course, it was a huge success.

Like her professional and family life, Amy brings everything she has to give to her training with me at FOR. She works hard to get ample sleep and maintain balance between her personal and professional lives – a non-negotiable staple for my clients to make progress. Like everything else in her life, she wants to be the best. So, in her workouts, we have “upped” her game and “raised the stakes” to including three challenging training sessions with me and her “homework” of several “flows” a day. Some weeks we squeeze in four. On several mornings at 6am, Amy and I can be found simply getting her strong, massively working her mobility, and discussing her continual list of fitness and health goals. Next up: handstand training. But first, pulls ups are in order!

ABOUT YOU

How do you spend your time? Lots of family and work, but I’m also trying to carve out some good, quality time to work out and get some “soul time” – whether it’s cooking, reading a good book, taking a walk with the dogs, listening to music, stretching, spa time, date night, or meeting a friend to catch up. It can be really hard to juggle it all but I’m working at it.

Neighborhood: Belle Haven

How long have you lived in Alexandria: More than 15 years

What is your hometown? North Haven, Connecticut

What brought you to Alexandria? I came to D.C. for law school and then lived in and around Alexandria when I worked at the U.S. Attorney’s Office in D.C. I craved being in an area that was smaller, walkable, had great restaurants and shops, lots of history, and where I could run. It provided a respite from the difficult cases I worked on and then I was hooked. I never left.

What would surprise people about you? I may look organized but I drop balls all the time, even with backups.

You’re a superhero: what’s your superpower? Ability to stop time. My world is measured by time and time is finite. It would be so cool to stop the world and just wander around.

Favorite cocktail: Dirty martini up with extra olives

Last book read or movie seen: The Greatest Showman

Guilty Pleasure: Getting a massage

Phrase you overuse: “No, but…” My kids inherited it. It’s awful. I would love to change it to “Yes, if…”

Facebook or Instagram? Probably Facebook but I don’t love either. Social media is a blessing and a curse.

Latest binge-watch: The Crown

Bucket list travel destination: Tuscany, Italy. I’m headed there this summer.

If you only could have one for the rest of your life: wine or coffee? I need both but if I could only have one it would be coffee. I can’t start my morning without it.

FASHION

Define your style in three words or less: Casual, comfortable

The go-to piece in your wardrobe: Simple jeans, black shirt

Favorite trend ever: Fleeces

Favorite current trend: Shirts and warm sweaters with bell sleeves

Beauty product you can’t live without: Mascara

Favorite fragrance: Lavender

Heels or flats? Heels

HOME

Favorite room in your home: Our open kitchen with a fireplace and windows to the garden.

Antiques, modern, or a mix? Mix of old and new. I love a comfortable, rustic feel.

Last item bought for your home: Kitchen chairs

Next planned purchase: Kitchen furniture re-do! Sofa, rugs, lights, bar stools…can’t wait!

Favorite way to entertain: Dinner party with friends.

Clutter-free or well-lived in? A mix but leaning more towards clutter-free.

Wallpaper — yes, totally modern or no, so dated: I’m not a huge fan of wall paper. I like paint – especially with texture.

FITNESS

Your go-to work-out: Love kettlebells

Most fun way to exercise: Trying new things that force me to completely disconnect from reality and the clock. I love exercising at Fitness on the Run for that reason. They really challenge me to focus, get stronger, and understand the importance of strength and mobility. I also love how Adrien Cotton and the FOR trainers have embraced my family. Both my husband, Sid, and daughter, Olivia, go to FOR and love it. My son, Jack, is next. For kids, it is a huge confidence builder. It’s really become a family affair.

Group exercise or solo: Duet with Sid or Olivia where we can challenge each other and do something together

Fitness goal: Strong core, solid abs

Haven’t yet, but might be willing to try with coaching / encouragement: Handstand push-ups

Proudest fitness achievement: Triathlon

ALEXANDRIA

Favorite spot in Alexandria: The waterfront

Last purchase in Alexandria: Shoes from The Shoe Hive

Best coffee / happy hour / date night spot: Date night — it’s a toss-up between Brabo and Restaurant Eve.

Favorite charity: My favorite place to give is Children’s National Medical Center.

Favorite annual Alexandria event: All of them!

  • The latest from Adrien
Adrien founded Fitness on the Run in 2004 out of her home after a successful career in policy and public affairs communications. After spending 15 years developing her own personal definition of wellness and watching thousands struggle with theirs, in January 2019 Adrien founded Alexandria Wellness, the home for the Concierge Wellness Program and Corporate Wellness with Adrien Cotton. Over the course of 15 years, “FOR” was home to more than 2,000 clients, 30 instructors, and hundreds of inspirational success stories. Adrien is now, more-than-ever, passionate about helping women view their fitness as a journey, not a quick fix. Adrien’s recipe for success herself has evolved from a rigid training plan of sweaty and heart pumping workouts to some days getting in her 10,000 steps, consciously breathing, her 7.5 hours of sleep, and her beloved 5-Minute Flow. Adrien believes the most important ingredient is making small changes for big results, even if it’s one new habit formed each month. Still passionate about fitness, Adrien’s clients appreciate her ability to make sessions seriously challenging without a “beat down,” a healthy mix of strength and metabolic (cardio) work and ultimately helping her clients gain real strength in mind and body. She believes we all benefit from being curious about our bodies and that change, or improvement, is within reach despite what your “inner voice” or others may tell you. Adrien is bubbling with excitement to help women learn the importance of a comprehensive approach to wellness, weight loss, and contentedness with yourself, and that every person has the right to feel good about themselves. Most days, you can find her helping clients with their wellness, listening to success stories, and bragging about her twin 13-year-old children and “fittest man in Alexandria” Bill Cotton. Adrien prides herself on her practice of mindfulness, meditation, and putting it all into perspective.

Alexandria Wellness offers achievable answers for anyone who is tired of chasing fitness and health without a clear plan, someone who has struggled and is not satisfied with their fitness and wellness or someone who is open to maximized healthful longevity and fitness along with healthful weight loss. Adrien and her team offer help with food guidance, body acceptance, sleep and stress issues, and insist you have fun along the way.
