A Story of 4 Furs

As I write this I am mistakenly wearing cashmere on an 83-degree day in October. How this happened, I’m not sure. But I am assured by weather.com that very soon after the time this publishes the weather will have cooled and a post on furs will once again be apropos. This is a good thing because The Hive has beautiful furs hanging on our racks right now, waiting on loving forever homes.

The designer of the furs is one we’ve carried before at The Shoe Hive — June Collection — but we’ve steered away from the vests of past seasons and moved on to jackets and coats. To showcase their versatility, I asked one of the most stylish and kindest people I know to model them, Judi Markarian of previous Fitness on the Run fame. She readily agreed and I couldn’t be happier with the way this style session turned out!

What I learned about these furs while styling them is that you can easily wear them as outerwear or as part of your outfit. Their layering potential is surprising. Here, for example, I actually have a Veronica Beard jacket layered underneath it, making the jacket functional for cold weather. For really cold days, swap out the pumps for boots or booties, and voila!

When I’m styling individuals for photo shoots, I often only have a very vague idea of what I want to do. It usually comes together in the moment after I see the pieces on the model. In this case, I honestly didn’t realize how perfect this Rebecca Taylor dress and the June navy fur were together until I saw it all on Judi. But, friends, it doesn’t get much more perfect than this.

Look 3: The Short Tan Fur

Since the first two outfits trended toward a more professional look, I opted to style the last two looks a little more casually. Judi looked so great in the Rebecca Taylor silk blouse we opted to layer it under the fur jacket a second time, but with denim and fur-lined sneakers. Yes, I doubled up on the fur, because why not?

For this last look, my instinct was once again to style it with whites, creams, and denim, so I had to force myself to look at this last fur differently. I opted to mix various shades of gray and let the fur pop against the darker color palette. Finishing it all with a hat and some glam sunnies was a last minute decision — one I’m glad we made.

In short, I think it’s best to quote Anna Wintour in the documentary “The September Issue” when asked if there is a way to wear fur this fall: “There is always a way to wear fur. Personally I have it on my back!”
