spring trend: how to wear dressy joggers

One of my favorite trends of the season is the dressy jogger. I have put them in many DC Style Factory client closets over the past several seasons. We have dressed them down for weekend casual, dressed them up for a Friday night out, and even put a Friday business casual spin on them for clients in creative work environments.

The dressy jogger is exactly as it sounds – slouchy trousers inspired by athletic pants. They are banded around the ankles and come in a variety of fabrics from silk to rayon to linen to chambray. So how do you work them so you don’t look like you are headed to the gym or getting ready to become one with your couch for a Mad Men marathon?

Keep these easy tips in mind:

Don’t pair with running shoes. Remember today’s joggers are to be styled – they shouldn’t read “workout.” Even the casual t-shirt/sandals outfit N’jeri is wearing has stylish elements: the bag, the necklace, the fun color and pattern of the shoe.

Do pay attention to fit. Look at fabric, drape and how much volume the joggers have. We are not going for an Ali G look! We want our joggers to feel youthful, but still have polish. For a more grown up look, joggers that have smaller banding or elastic around the ankles work better than ones that have the wider banding around the ankles.

Do incorporate dressier textures with your joggers. Add pattern, texture or shine to dress up your joggers.

Do wear your joggers for dressier nights out. When I dress my clients for weekends out to dinner, parties, drinks with friends I know I want their look to feel special, but effortless. The dressy jogger – like denim — can be a great way to ground and add a modern, edgier element to a night-out look.

Finally…DO try joggers no matter your age or body type. You may be surprised that you can wear them and that they do add a new element, fun element to your style and wardrobe.
