Let’s be honest, working out on a regular basis is hard. If it were easy everyone would do it and we wouldn’t have a health crisis in this country. It’s a unique and dedicated (some people might say ‘not quite right’) person that bounds out of bed or comes running home from work ready to workout.
You’d think that as an owner of a gym I’d be one of those people who “just does it on their own.” Well let me tell you…that couldn’t be further from the truth.
I thrive on the motivation I get from the people around me – my husband, my friends, and the trainers at the gym. It’s these people that keep me moving every day. My husband and I walk most evenings, both for the exercise and just to talk about our day or the upcoming day. I join classes at the gym with my friends and when I train at the gym with Heather, Ryan, Andre, Remi, Dominika, or Jason, I strongly encourage them to work out with me and not just train me. I get so much more motivation with someone doing the sets by my side. And this isn’t just me; there are a ton of studies out there that validate the power of working out with a partner.
Simply put, the healthy behaviors of others rub off on us. Two recent studies show the impact an exercise partner can have: A study published in the Journal of Social Sciences found that the exercise behaviors of those around you will influence your behavior. And it’s not just exercise: a 2016 study published in the journal Obesity found that overweight people tend to lose more weight if they spend time with friends who exercise regularly. And the more time they spent with these friends — the more weight they lost.
What is so powerful about having an exercise buddy? Can it really be as simple as… get a friend and get healthy? Exercise partners provide a meaningful combination of support, accountability, motivation, and in some cases, healthy competition. “They can plan the role of teammate, co-coach, and cheerleader – all while working out,” says Michelle P. Maidenber, PhD, MPH, clinical director of Westchester Group Works in Harrison, NY.
So grab a friend or partner and head to the gym. Most gyms allow you to bring a friend for a small fee and some gyms (like…maybe… Fitness on the Run 😉 ) may even have a “bring a friend for free” program going on.
Come back next week as we continue our month-long series talking about the benefits of finding an exercise partner.
