Scout Is Out!

I am so excited to finally be able to say, “Scout Is Out!” Our latest volume of The Scout Guide Alexandria launched last week with a bang with a beautiful outdoor party at River Farm to celebrate! This year’s book was over a year in the making, and while the pandemic threw some curveballs our way, the guide came out better than ever!

The past year taught us so much about ourselves and the resilience of our community as we came together with an outpouring of love and support for the small businesses in Alexandria. It was – and continues to be – the life support they need to keep their doors open. As someone who had a front row seat to the struggle, I am beyond certain we will all emerge stronger and closer than ever before.

Creating this book in the midst of a global pandemic was a challenge, but our small business owners were absolute rock stars. On set for our photoshoots, things looked a little different this year with masks, sanitizer, and distance, but I believe what we created for you encompasses the light, laughter, beauty, and magic that we have all been missing.

The Scout Guide has been committed to supporting local businesses and non-profits since we first came to Alexandria six years ago, and we now see just how critical our mission remains. Each year, we give back to a different Alexandria non-profit organization, and this year our membership nominated The Carpenters Shelter. This local organization supports the homeless in achieving sustainable independence through shelter, guidance, education, and advocacy. We are proud to support the Carpenters Shelter, and the TSG community looks forward to partnering to raise awareness and funds for this amazing organization. The cover of our book is purple in honor of them, and the pink stripe is there to honor last year’s partnership with The National Breast Center Foundation.

Thank you for reading, supporting the TSG community, and frequenting our small businesses that make Alexandria the special place we call home. We encourage you to pick up a new guide at one of the many local businesses around town, and we hope you continue to support them in any way you can, and when you do, be sure to tell them, “The Scout Guide sent you!”

I’m a Virginia girl, born (Alexandria) and raised (Warrenton). I studied fashion and marketing at Radford University and after 10 years in the corporate world (not doing anything fashion related), I decided to go on my own and pursue my dream as a blogger and consultant. I started my personal blog, Fifty-Two Thursdays, in 2013 as a way to share local finds, skincare secrets, and outfit inspiration with my friends. What started as a hobby turned into a full-blown business after a few years of blood, sweat, and tears (mildly kidding). I returned to Alexandria just two years ago (coming from Arlington) and took on the position as Editor/Owner of TSG Alexandria. I live and breathe local here in Alexandria and absolutely love sharing my knowledge of blogging, photo styling, and social media with the community!

Owned and edited by Sarah Phillips, the Alexandria guide highlights premier independent businesses in Alexandria, Virginia, and surrounding areas. Learn more about the businesses featured in The Scout Guide Alexandria guide and enjoy an insider’s view of the area by visiting the TSG Alexandria website. Complimentary copies of the guide are available at participating businesses.
