Pantone’s Color of the Year: How To Bring Ultra Violet into Your Life

If you follow the design world, or maybe even if you don’t, you’ve heard that Pantone, whose Color Institute forecasts global color trends and is recognized around the world as a leading source of color information, has announced its color of the year: Ultra Violet. Calling the color “inventive and imaginative” and “nuanced and full of emotion,” Pantone says Ultra Violet “communicates originality, ingenuity, and visionary thinking that points us toward the future.”

Pointing toward the future is a great sentiment, one that we can embrace at the beginning of a new year. If you really love purple, you probably already have it in your life, whether in your wardrobe or on your walls. But maybe a propensity for purple is new to you, and something about the mood and vibe of Ultra Violet is resonating with you right now. Should you slap up a couple coats of Benjamin Moore’s Charmed Violet (#1398), Fire and Ice (#1392), or Gentle Violet (#2071-20), or Sherwin Williams’ African Violet (SW 6982)? Well, if you are really feeling it, go for it.

But for the rest of us, here are some easy ways to bring a pop of this cool, moody blue-purple to your home.

With Art

Recent works at the Ivy Lane Living gallery by Lanie Mann, Hayley Mitchell, and Jodi Ferrier include shades of purple and would bring interest and quiet intensity to an otherwise neutral space.

With Flowers…

We love the inventive work of Wildflower Floral Design’s Jacky Longwell — and if you don’t follow her feed on Insta, you should. Here the deep purples are paired with rich oranges and deep reds for an unexpected arrangement. And the beauty of an arrangement is that you can commit to as much or as little color as you like!

…and Other Natural Elements

With Fabric

Swatches of fabrics available to the trade.

From reupholstering a beloved piece to simply adding a custom pillow, these fabrics bring Ultra Violet to life in styles from traditional to modern. Whatever your level of commitment to adding Ultra Violet to your life, the ladies at Ivy Lane would be happy to help you enhance your home.
