fibre space Lands a New Home…and a New PARKnership Takes Off

New Fibre Space

In case you missed it, fibre space is relocated to a final home at 1319 Prince Street! The building is the only known historic flatiron in the city, and the fun new shape has inspired a whole new interior design. We hope to be moved in by mid September. But in the meantime, we want to invite you to be part of a special project that I’ve been putting together. The new location for fibre space sits at the intersection of Commerce, Prince, and West streets, forming a wonderful, large courtyard out front.

New Fibre Space

We are hard at work to transform our new building into a permanent home for our community. As part of that effort, we have partnered with the City of Alexandria to turn the courtyard out front into an inviting public space that our community and our neighbors can all enjoy.

Beautiful new Loll Adirondack rockers are on their way to offer a comfortable place to sit and knit, along with a cheerful bistro table and chairs for you to enjoy a cup of coffee or meeting with friends. Fresh landscaping and other surprises await you at 1319 Prince Park. My favorite part of this design will be a bit of a surprise, but I can’t wait to show you!

Bringing our vision to life will require some creative partnerships and investments. We’re partnering with the City of Alexandria through their “PARKnership” program to make this happen. The city will replace some of the missing trees and install a bike rack, and we will take on landscaping, maintenance, and providing furniture!

But we need your help. Our park design will cost close to $5,000 for furniture and plants. That’s why we’re auctioning off some beautiful handknits! Our staff and friends have generously donated finished items: sweaters, shawls, hats, and more. We will be showcasing and auctioning more than forty items through our Instagram, and ALL proceeds will go to the 1319 Prince Street Park.

Starting tomorrow, Wednesday, August 30th, jump to our IG account to bid on one of several items (see a sampling below). Make your bid in the comments. Auctions will close at 11 pm EDT each evening.

If you want to make a donation to our project, you can always make your good wishes known by sending a PayPal donation to 1319PrincePark AT fibrespace.com.

  • The latest from Danielle
Danielle, owner of the fibre space shop, has been knitting since the age of six or so, when she completed her first project – a Cabbage Patch doll scarf. A Pittsburgh native with a degree in international development, she moved to the D.C. area to find a job and quickly established a career in non profit management and fundraising. For extra cash, she decided to turn her hobby into a job and taught knitting classes in the evening at area shops. With a heavy dose of sarcasm and a tough love style of teaching, Danielle quickly developed a following of students – busy D.C. professionals looking for a creative outlet. In October 2006, she struck out on her own with Knit-a-Gogo, Inc. – offering knitting classes and events all over the D.C. metro area. Before she knew it, Knit-a-Gogo had grown out of control and Danielle moved to the next natural step – a full service yarn shop. In July 2009 fibre space was born and has been rockin’ ever since. When she isn’t behind the scenes with a mocha in hand, Danielle is hanging with her daughter or lobbying for small business needs at City Hall.
