New Exhibit At The Torpedo Factory Art Center

Founded in 1974 in an old munitions plant, the Torpedo Factory Art Center is home to the nation’s largest collection of working artists’ open studios under one roof. An Alexandria landmark for more than 40 years, it’s the highlight of the Potomac Riverfront, attracting approximately 500,000 visitors annually.

The new show in Target Gallery, the contemporary exhibition space of Torpedo Factory Art Center, takes an introspective view of how space is occupied or left alone. Those Spaces Between Us, on view April 10 through May 23, 2021, is a hybrid digital and in-person exhibition that explores transition, ambiguity, and being on the threshold of change. The gallery promotes high standards of art by continuously exploring new ideas through a variety of visual media in a rotating schedule of national and international exhibitions.

Those Spaces Between Us considers the distances between people and their surroundings and how that divide becomes its own character in art, history, memories, and the stories people tell about themselves. For many of the artists, physical spaces are the visual focal point of the work. Others explored this conceptual idea of “space” within a different context, such as personal or emotional distance.

The exhibition features 23 artists, with 11 from the greater D.C. metropolitan region.

Target Gallery hosts a virtual reception via Facebook Live on Friday, May 14, at 7pm as a part of Torpedo Factory Art Center’s The Late Shift Online event. The digital catalog will be live by Friday, April 16.

Target Gallery is open Wednesday through Sunday from 10am – 6pm. Target Gallery has a limited visitor capacity to allow for social distancing. Those who wish to visit Torpedo Factory Art Center are asked to adhere to current Virginia Safer at Home guidelines, including maintaining a social distance with people from different households, wearing face coverings indoors, and frequent handwashing for 20 seconds or use of hand sanitizer with at least 60 percent alcohol.
