Did you know there is a National Rosé Day?  It happens to be tomorrow and I couldn’t be happier about it.  I plan to celebrate it in a big way.  The latest Cote d’Azur trend is equipping your yacht with a special refrigerator designed specifically to hold three magnum size bottles of rosé.  I hardly have a yacht but we do have a 22’ Boston Whaler that I plan to be on drinking rosé right here on the Potomac River. I may even buy a magnum for my girlfriends and myself.  Rosé on the Cote d’Potomac?

Drinking rosé is a fairly new trend, although at this point it’s hard to imagine summer without it.   According to Food & Wine magazine, ten years ago, no one in the U.S. drank it.  If you wanted pink wine, you drank White Zinfandel, often in a retirement home.  Now things are different.  Essentially over the past few years everyone has decided they want to spend the entire summer drinking as much rosé as humanly possible — something like 500 million bottles per year in the U.S. alone.  In France, people now drink more rosé than they do white wine.

Lots of great choices.

The best article I came across about rosé is the fact that when the Hamptons had a rosé shortage, it became national news.  Clearly people on the Hamptons don’t have very many problems if this is their biggest one!  And clearly they are tirelessly swilling it down to have a shortage.  Sounds like a pretty good life. That said, I have noticed at some summer parties in Alexandria, we aren’t far behind.  I am sure this season we will all be stocked up.

Because of this popularity many winemakers have started making expensive rosés, but I think rosé is so popular because it is an uncomplicated crisp wine that has a low price and brings everyone happiness.  Why go making it complicated?

My question to you is: what will be the trendiest rosé of 2016?  For a couple of years it was OTT then it was Whispering Angel.  What is your favorite?  Let us know!
