Yes, it’s true. There is actually a correct form to jumping rope.
1) Find a jump rope that is the correct length for your height.
2) Beginners: Practice jumping without a jump rope. We call it “virtual jump rope”
3) Place your arms by your side with wrists next to your hips palms front facing.
4) Pull the jump rope over the back of your head and start to jump with a tempo. Ideally you are jumping one time for every rotation of the jump rope.
5) Only jump 2-3 inches from the floor. A common mistake is jumping too high off the floor.
6) The key is the quick rotation of the rope, using your wrist/arms, not how high you jump to clear the jump rope.
7) Various ways to make jumping rope more challenging: jumping jaxs with your feet; high knees; skipping; rotating the jump rope two time before your feet hit the ground.

A great jump rope workout:
20 jump rope rotations, 40-60-80-100 alternating with 20 seconds, plank between each round.
Bigger challenge: go back down the ladder
The fun is endless! It will bring back childhood memories!
