look of the day: family portrait

Looking back at my own family portrait from seven years ago, I wish I had known what I know now. Don’t over-think it. The more you actually look like your normal self (albeit a slightly better version), the more you will love how the photos turn out. In terms of what to wear, however, there are a few “rules” to follow:

Avoid prints if at all possible. With multiple people in the shot, it just becomes visually cluttering. Wear color. Nothing fluorescent, but a beautiful saturated jewel tone like this blouse from Zoe Boutique will warm your complexion and contrast nicely. Be sentimental and stylish. When it comes to jewelry, layer (although with moderation) a few heirloom pieces and more modern pieces, like a string of family pearls with this monogram necklace from Kiskadee. Finish off the look with a pair of skinny black pants, black wedges with gold detailing and a clutch (for before and after the photo session) like these from The Shoe Hive. Angela from Bellacara recommends wearing Kevyn Aucoin’s matte lipstick in Relentless: “Don’t get lost in the crowd. Wear a lip color that gets you noticed.” And of course, once you have those gorgeous prints, whether you are gifting them to someone else or displaying them in your own home, you will need an equally gorgeous frame like the one pictured here from Coco Blanca.
