Let’s Talk About Mascara

Okay ladies, let’s face it… the eyes have it. They always have, but with these face masks our eyes are more important than ever. We can’t see your lips, we can’t see your cheeks, but we can see your eyes. So how do you make the most of them?

Most women put their mascara on the same. They start at the base of the lashes and they work their way up and out. But this has its limitations. You can only get so much length and drama this way. Even if you put on two coats. So, what’s the best way to add drama?

I always tell my customers to put their mascara on the way they normally would. Start at the base of the lash. Work your way up by wiggling the wand back and forth while pulling up and out towards the temple and the eyebrow. That’s a great first coat. Let that dry for a minute. Then what? Another coat? Yes, but not following the same application.

The second coat should be on top of the lashes. Start at the base of the lash, closest to the eyelid. Then pull outward and up toward the tips of the eyelash. Finish by taking the wand and sweeping up from the base of the lash line and upward to the tips as you normally would. In essence, this is three coats.

Do only one eye this way and compare it to the other eye. You’ll notice a dramatic difference. If you only have the eyes to do the talking, make sure they turn up the volume.

I have been a beauty junkie for what seems like forever, but before I did anything about it, I went to law school. (Yes, my life is a little like the reverse of Legally Blonde.) Then, I worked as a prosecutor in Sonoma County after which I moved to the DC area with my husband in ’97. I served as Majority Counsel to the Senate Banking Committee followed by a year-long stint at a lobbying firm. You get the picture. It was then that I decided to act on my dream of becoming an entrepreneur. Finding my favorite beauty products proved to be impossible without stepping foot in a mall–the horror. So, I decided to bring my favorites to Alexandria. A few trips to New York and a flight to France and Bellacara was born in March 2000.

Located in historic Old Town Alexandria, for more than 17 years Bellacara has been Northern Virginia's preeminent boutique for high end cosmetic, skincare and haircare products. At Bellacara you will find premiere beauty products that have been carefully edited by the store’s owner, Angela Sitilides, who personally tests all the products sold in store.
