layering rugs, a faux pas?

Reader: I have carpet in my apartment and want to invest in a rug for my living room. Is it a faux pas to layer a rug over carpeting? Is there a “right” way to do it?

Gayla: Yes, Coco loves the luxurious feel of an area rug on top of carpet. Layering rugs, like layering clothes, adds texture, color, and dimension. It loosens up traditional design and makes it more inviting. For the best results, start with a tightly woven, low-pile carpet or sisal in a solid tone. Complement it with almost any area rug such as a hide rug or a wool or cotton with a design. Coco Blanca offers both hide rugs and a line of wool and cotton rugs from Barrier Island, that would add just the right amount of texture and color that you need.

Although, if you have carpet with a higher pile it is a little trickier. The key is to make sure you have a rug that is heavy enough that is doesn’t crawl. We wouldn’t put a sisal on top of carpet, but a Turkish or Oriental rug on top of a high pile carpet usually works. And if you put your coffee table on top, it keeps it in place and adds a focal point to the room. While at High Point Furniture Market, we saw showroom after showroom with Oriental rugs on top of carpet. It is a great look. The picture below has an oriental on top of pile carpeting. Elle Décor proves how great it can look!
