Knitter’s Secret to Keeping Hands Soft

Raise your hand if you are obsessively washing your hands right now. I know I am! My hands should be suffering because of it, but as a knitter, I’ve got a secret to keeping my hands nice and soft. While you may have purchased sanitary wipes, soaps, and disinfecting spray in the last couple of weeks, have you also grabbed something to help take care of your dry hands? Knitters always have a variety of hand lotions laying around because knitting dries out our hands, and rough skin catches the yarn. Rough and loose skin makes knitting more difficult and even uncomfortable.

Right now, my go-to for treating my dry and over-washed hands is the Lanolin-Rich Knitter’s Hand Balm. This balm comes in a super convenient twist tube, which makes it really easy to apply to the back of my hands just after washing them. The ingredients are pure and simple: cocoa butter, lanolin, coconut oil, beeswax, shea butter, and essential oils. The lanolin in this balm is what makes it extra special. Lanolin is the amber colored natural wax that is on wool, helping to protect the coat of the sheep from the elements. It is incredibly effective at protecting and moisturizing our skin (and is probably in many of the cosmetic products you use)! It is extracted from the wool after the sheep is sheared, thus causing no harm to the animal.

Danielle, owner of the fibre space shop, has been knitting since the age of six or so, when she completed her first project – a Cabbage Patch doll scarf. A Pittsburgh native with a degree in international development, she moved to the D.C. area to find a job and quickly established a career in non profit management and fundraising. For extra cash, she decided to turn her hobby into a job and taught knitting classes in the evening at area shops. With a heavy dose of sarcasm and a tough love style of teaching, Danielle quickly developed a following of students – busy D.C. professionals looking for a creative outlet. In October 2006, she struck out on her own with Knit-a-Gogo, Inc. – offering knitting classes and events all over the D.C. metro area. Before she knew it, Knit-a-Gogo had grown out of control and Danielle moved to the next natural step – a full service yarn shop. In July 2009 fibre space was born and has been rockin’ ever since. When she isn’t behind the scenes with a mocha in hand, Danielle is hanging with her daughter or lobbying for small business needs at City Hall.
