Think Outside the Box, part 2: It’s All in the Finishing

So you found the perfect gift and now it is time to wrap it. While I personally love gift wrapping, I realize that it is the very last thing that most of us do during the holiday season because we loathe doing it. Since this is my favorite part of gift giving, I am going to share with you my secret to gorgeous packages!

It’s all in the finishing.

Whether you’ve selected the most expensive or least expensive paper, the finishes on the top of the package can make a world of difference. I am a huge fan of topping off gifts with yet another gift. A Christmas ornament can be tied into the bow or a cookie cutter attached to the box of cookies you are giving. This year, I incorporated yarn and string into all of my packages.

Pom-poms and tassels are quick to make and can really punch up any paper. The recipient can reuse them on a hat or tie them to their keys. This pom-pom was made with a bulky weight wool from fibre space using our llama pom pom maker, shown below. One skein of the wool is getting me through quite a bit of wrapping!

A versatile pom maker like the Loome tool will also allow you to do a quick weaving in addition to making a pom-pom. I absolutely love the result of putting a small weaving piece on top of a package like the one seen here:

Lastly, small woven or embroidered pieces add a hand-made touch to a gift and are incredibly satisfying (and quick) to make. We have these stitch-able ornaments right now, which make wonderful gift toppers. Don’t worry, they are kits and come with everything that you need to make them! And these round weaving pieces are easy to make and make beautiful gift toppers as well.

  • The latest from Danielle
Danielle, owner of the fibre space shop, has been knitting since the age of six or so, when she completed her first project – a Cabbage Patch doll scarf. A Pittsburgh native with a degree in international development, she moved to the D.C. area to find a job and quickly established a career in non profit management and fundraising. For extra cash, she decided to turn her hobby into a job and taught knitting classes in the evening at area shops. With a heavy dose of sarcasm and a tough love style of teaching, Danielle quickly developed a following of students – busy D.C. professionals looking for a creative outlet. In October 2006, she struck out on her own with Knit-a-Gogo, Inc. – offering knitting classes and events all over the D.C. metro area. Before she knew it, Knit-a-Gogo had grown out of control and Danielle moved to the next natural step – a full service yarn shop. In July 2009 fibre space was born and has been rockin’ ever since. When she isn’t behind the scenes with a mocha in hand, Danielle is hanging with her daughter or lobbying for small business needs at City Hall.
