As I’ve developed my own style, I’ve always tried to follow three rules. And over the years, they have served me well:

1. If you don’t love it in the store, you will never wear it.
2. Trust your instincts.
3. Be comfortable.

My shape and my tastes have certainly evolved, but these three guidelines have always helped me when making fashion choices. I’ve found that when I am comfortable and like what I am wearing, that is when I feel the most confident.

A piece of clothing that I have come across recently that has made me feel comfortable and sublimely happy are wide-leg linen pants. I have always thought that wide-leg pants would make me feel “fat” or appear larger than I am. I also assumed that I was too tall to wear them. It wasn’t until I slipped into my first pair that I realized it had the opposite effect. I immediately felt slimmer and taller.

When wearing wide-leg pants, it’s important to remember proportions. When wearing something loose-fitting on the bottom, keep the top more fitted or smaller. Likewise, when wearing an over-sized T-shirt or a tunic, keep the pants fitted.

Another great thing about these pants is their ability to be dressed up or dressed down. They can be worn with flats or heels, tank top or blouse, at the beach or out to dinner in Georgetown. Darby and I put together some looks to show their versatility, and to show that they can be worn by anyone, no matter their height.
