holiday party dress code: four tips to use right now

One of the most common questions I get as a personal stylist in the DC area is, “How do I go from work to after-work with colleagues?” It’s like you need to be like a mullet – business in the front and party in the back. Ok, bad analogy, but you get my point. You have to wear something polished and professional, but incorporate festive elements into your look.

This question usually reaches a fevered pitch during the holiday season when office parties are around every corner. It is not the first time we have tackled it at DC Style Factory. We have all added the sparkly statement necklace and sparkly shoes to our LBDs, though. What else?  Here are some fresh new ways to go from desk to festive this season.

1. Add some fuzz. Fur and faux fur continue to be on-trend this season. We have seen fur shoes, jackets, vests march down the runway, and now they are on the streets. The easiest way to do fur for a work holiday function is to go monochromatic. Layer a sleek black faux fur vest over a trim black blazer and skinny black pants. Note: Keep base pieces polished and tailored. The texture of the fur will add a lux, evening feel to your look.

2. Try a statement brooch. And we are not talking your grandma’s brooch here. Or maybe we are, but worn in a very 2015 way. I love the look of a large brooch in the lapel of a tuxedo-style blazer to add sparkle. If you want to push the envelope, a-la Janelle Monáe, try it with a high-neck blouse, worn as if it was a statement necklace.

3.Wrap up in a skinny scarf. Skinny scarves are back and the look can feel either from the boys (necktie style) or retro ladylike (tied around neck like a choker and flowing long down your back). Either way, it is an easy way to add sparkle and style to your holiday look this season.

4. Go baroque. Neo-Victorian is everywhere. Our styling team devoted an entire spread in September’s Northern Virginia Magazine to the trend.  My favorite way to do neo-Victorian this season is with brocade pants and skirts. The dark romantic print and texture feels modern when done in a pencil skirt or slim pant.  Perfect for an office holiday party.
