high-low demystified

For the most part, I like being short. Or petite, as some would say. It may require asking a stranger to get something off the top shelf at the grocery store for me, or always being in the front row of group pictures, but for the most part, I don’t mind it at all.

There is one thing though that being short makes a lot more difficult: dressing.

That’s right. Even for the owner of a clothing boutique. Most clothing is cut for taller women, leggier women, women who are rarely in the front row of a group picture. Of course, there is the occasional petite section, but I don’t always find what I’m looking for there. Generally speaking, I have my clothes tailored and I look for trends that are friendly to the vertically-challenged like me.

There is a current trend that is right up my alley: high-low dresses and skirts.

A maxi skirt can overwhelm me very quickly, but I love their dramatic swish-and-sway. On the other hand, I love wearing shorter skirts, especially in the summer. They’re just so easy. Well, you can have your cake and eat it too. High-low dresses and skirts combine the best of both worlds: flattering and practical, they provide drama and comfort. Of course, this trend isn’t just for shorter women. In fact, it is universally flattering, but if you’re short like me, I recommend embracing this trend without reservation. After all, we can’t let the taller women have all the fun.
