If you’re looking for a way to get rid of the unwanted clothing in your household and make some cash, consigning might be your way to go. Whether your kiddos have items that they have outgrown or you have pieces that just don’t work for you any longer, it’s time to edit your closet and research options for a local consignment store. If you’re a mama, we’re hoping to see your fabulous maternity pieces and goodies from your kiddos sometime soon!

But before you load up boxes and garment bags here are some tips for consigning. At 529 we provide guidelines for our consignors, but below are some general tips to use when you’re ready to consign!

Tips For Consigning Your Clothes

  • Make sure your clothing is seasonal. Most consignment shops are looking for clothes in the current or next season. As mentioned, many stores will start collecting Fall items in July and Spring items in January.
  • Make sure clothes are clean and fresh smelling. When choosing items to consign make sure they are clean and stain free. It might be worth a trip to the cleaners for your higher-priced items.
  • Brands bring the bucks. In addition to rules, many consignment shops have guidelines explaining desired brands that sell well with their customer base. Become familiar and use the guidelines to decide which consignment shop to shop your closet. Buyers often want brand names, so when selecting items to consign, flock to your name brand.
  • Prepare clothes to look their best. Replacing buttons, cutting loose threads, ironing shirts and collars and zipping zippers can make all the difference. Think about making your clothes look like their ready for display.
  • Know the shop’s rules. While many consignment shops have similar rules and procedures, each shop can have differences so pay attention before you go.
  • Follow the store rules. When stores are asking for a certain type of clothing (workwear, chic casual clothing, After 5 attire etc) make sure the items you bring align with those rules. Also be aware of store rules about needing to make appointments or walk-ins.

Happy Consigning!

  • The latest from Megan
Megan’s career in retail/merchandising began in the mid nineties standing in front of a woodsy smelling Abercrombie and Fitch. Sporting an oversized plaid flannel and bootcut jeans she said hello to every customer that eagerly walked in to the popular retailer. Little did Megan know that, while creating a perfect “denim wall”and dressing in all of the latest fashion that the lifestyle brand offered she was building the foundation for her fun and exciting career! After graduating from the University of Pittsburgh, Megan managed multiple A&F stores before she moved on to an assistant buyer position in contemporary dresses at the local Arlington based retailer Hecht’s (now Macy’s). She gained an immeasurable amount of knowledge before moving onto a different facet of the business at Calvin Klein Jeans. Megan worked her way from retail coordinator to East-Coast regional manager helping to create the Calvin Klein aesthetic in department stores from Boston to Miami. After her first son Ethan was born, her position at CKJ was eliminated, due to the harsh economic conditions at the time. This is how 529 was born! Megan quickly began to see how fast Ethan was growing out of his clothing. She knew other moms had the same amount of adorable “gently-worn” clothing piling up. Combining her love of retail and her obsession with dressing Ethan gave her the idea to try and sell this clothing. 529 became a popular “pop-up” shop in the Alexandria area and once the following was big enough, a brick and mortar store in historic Old Town. 529 Kids Consign exemplifies who Megan is and what she has learned throughout her career. It’s a warm, well-organized, well- edited boutique that attracts moms from all over the DC metro area. On any given visit to the store you may be greeted by three boys dressed to the nines..they too have the passion.
