Give yourself permission, but don’t punish yourself in the process.
We give ourselves more permission during this season than most. We all lead hectic lives and it is nice to be able to celebrate the season. We tend to want to reward ourselves at the end of the day or week for all of the work we “did” that week. We at Fitness on the Run hear frequently “I can’t wait for that glass of wine at the end of the day.” Or, “I deserve it. I work hard.”
Just remember the food related splurge will adversely affect your desire for health and fitness. And it will sideline your fitness program.
As an alternative, consider rewarding yourself with non-food or non-harmful means. Give yourself a break. Get a massage. Check out one of our amazing city’s museums. Go to a concert. Consider starting a Grateful Journal. Daily write down five things for which you are grateful every day. It’s remarkable how effective it is in changing your daily or weekly desire for reward.
If you are attending parties, eat a solid healthy meal before you leave home. This can mitigate “cheating” on the passed food or the dessert tray. Get used to saying “no thank you. I ate a late lunch.” Hold a glass of water for the whole party. This takes one hand out of the equation for grabbing more food or for holding another drink.
If you cannot possibly pass, only one treat allowed. Find that one treat that is worth the cheat. And be done with it. Don’t punish yourself. Just move on to the next minute and savor it.
