Front Porch Sessions with Sarah Marcella

Quarantine has brought about every single one of my emotions – I have laughed, I have cried, I’ve worried, I’ve over-thought, I’ve been pushed to my limit, but I have also been very grateful. I can confidently say this will, without a doubt, be a time I will never forget. This is a crazy unprecedented time that is worth remembering. Which is why I was thrilled to hear our favorite Alexandria photographer, Sarah Marcella, is offering drive-by, front step photos to capture you and your family exactly as you are in quarantine; let’s capture these beautiful emotions!

Tell us about yourself:

I’m Sarah Marcella, your local beboppin’ smilin’ photographer. You’ve probably seen me out and about shooting for local boutiques, charity events, and portraits of all kinds.

What made you decide to do this:

This idea was actually brought to me by Megan Podolsky – Stylebook member and Old Town Boutique District President. She approached me about photographing the Old Town Boutiques through our visual campaign “Community Is.” This project brings awareness to the small business community during this challenging time. Each owner shares one word of what community means to them. It was an absolute honor to capture this project.

During this time, many families expressed interest in having their moment captured. What we are living through is challenging and scary. Families are using these shoots to preserve a moment in time to look back on and remember how resilient they are. For many, this is giving them a reason to “dress up,” several have mentioned that it’s the first time they’ve worn real clothing in weeks!

What do these photoshoots entail?

Over 90% of these shoots I shoot from my car, normally out the passenger side window and my sunroof. If I do step out of my car, I keep a distance of at least 10 feet, normally even further. I shoot with my zoom lens, 70-200mm which allows me to keep a safe distance, well within the CDC guidelines. In addition to social distancing, I wear a face mask (thank you Tulusa Goods!) and use an excessive amount of hand sanitizer.

Don’t worry – me shooting from my car does not hinder the quality of my work. I’ll still tell you how to pose, to adjust your hair, and make silly jokes to get your children to giggle!

What is the cost?

The 15-minute shoot includes 5-7 edited images, online downloadable gallery, and print release for $150.

Why this is so awesome:

Listen, we all need something to look forward to right now. There is so much uncertainty in our lives. These shoots are fun, short, and allow you a break in your regular routine. I’ve found that everyone, including children, have been enjoying these shoots. They’re more comfortable being in their environment rather than out somewhere in Old Town such as the cobblestone (a popular family portrait location). You’ll be surprised at how painless the process is, and you’ll have your family portrait for the holidays done well ahead of schedule! You’re welcome to include your fur babies as well – I’ll even include a solo portrait of them in your shoot!

See, just look how thrilled Paisley is to have her portrait taken!
