five easy ways to spruce up your bookshelves

Whether it’s a simple stand-alone bookcase or a built-in-wall-unit, a bookshelf can provide a strong accent to your home decor. Unlike a complete room remodel, reworking a bookshelf can be done quickly, inexpensively and can be executed using your existing furnishings. No matter what your style is, we have come up with 5 simple ways to turn your ordinary bookcases into stylish and eye-catching displays.

1. Give an old outdated library a face lift by removing the dust jackets and sorting the books by color instead of by author or title. Combine pink and black books in stacks or groupings for high drama and a stylish vibe.

2. Turn books or magazines on their sides and stack them up for a simple yet chick look. Space the stacks on your shelves, leaving room around them for photographs and cool collectibles.

3. Make sure to keep your shelves free of clutter and that they are both useful and visually appealing. It is easy to over-stock your shelves with old books, knickknacks and magazines from years past but think to yourself, are those things your family or your guests want to look at? These things are better stored in cute boxes or stored in the attic. A tip is to only keep books on your shelves that you are likely to read again, if you know you won’t be picking it up anytime soon, it may be time to pass on to a friend or to donate it.

4. To give your bookcase both depth and interest, try painting the back of it with a contrasting color or by adding a patterned wall paper. This will give it a pop of unexpected color that will help update an old boring bookshelf and transform it into a modern place where you can display your books and valued possessions.

5. Style a bookcase with unexpected items, like an eye-catching antique or a mercury glass vase. A few striking objects can create a visually interesting display that will turn a mundane shelf into an art display. Also be sure to utilize your favorite books, photographs and family heirlooms in your displays.

    Hi,
I asked a question.a month or so ago and never received an answer. Is there a moderator to respond that I can directly contact? I was asking about a coral colored purse in a photo. If you have archives, it can be easily found. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.
