Our Favorite Fall Activities

Fall is a season that gets everyone excited and it seems that around July 1st people start longing for sweater weather and PSLs. Being a native Houstonian, however, fall is a fairly new concept to me (our seasons tend to be hot and hotter). So, I had to ask, what was so fun about fall…and it turns out, there’s a whole lot to do once the temps dip.

If you know me, you know I rarely leave Alexandria! So the idea of heading west for an hour in the car to see pumpkins on a farm is very daunting. Instead, I love taking the boys to Nall’s Produce, right here in ALX, off of Beulah. Every year I capture the boys in some fun photo in front of the now insta-famous pumpkin wall! It’s fun to look back on the pics year after year. 🎃

My favorite fall activity is to just sit in our backyard when the weather is a bit chilly with my family. We curl up on the sofas under blankets and light a fire in the outdoor fireplace and just talk. The boys roast marshmallows and make s’mores and we stay outside until well after dark.

We are campers. I never in my life thought that was what I would become but it’s true. Fall is my favorite season and it’s perfect for camping. We’ll pack up the the dog, our gear, and a campfire feast and head to the woods to become one with nature. It’s a great way to reconnect as a family and relax.

A couple weeks ago I took a day trip to Charlottesville to visit Lane. Carter Mountain Family Orchard was the perfect destination for a mother-daughter afternoon. The two of us picked apples and then lounged at the picnic tables where time finally stood still for just a little while. The weather was steamy that day and a cup of Bold Rock Hard Cider hit the spot. We also left with a dozen sugar coated apple cider doughnuts as well as our share of apples – Jonagold to be exact – crisp and delicious! And Lane has gone back twice with her gal pals to the Thursday Evening Sunset Series for a little chill time with live music and a breathtaking sunset (May – September).

I adore fall! My favorite activity has to be fall decorating, especially my own front porch. I just love piling up pumpkins and experimenting with shades beyond the basic brown and orange. We offer hand-lettered white pumpkins in our shop, so a few of those finish off my look! They are real pumpkins, so they don’t look cheesy mixed in with all the other living elements.

Fall is my favorite season! There is so much to be excited about. One of my favorite fall activities is Art on the Avenue in Del Ray. Held on the first Saturday of October, it’s always a fun way to kick off the fall season. Plus, we at Kiskadee always have a tent sale. It makes the day extra exciting and busy!

I’ll be honest: I like fall in theory but in reality, it’s always kind of a difficult time for us. Both of Tim’s parents passed away in the fall and it feels like every year around this time, we get bad news about someone. Add to that the ramping up of custom projects in preparation for the holidays and you get a big barrel of stress. So, Tim and I try to make as much time as possible to get out of the city and into our favorite hiking spots in the Shenandoah Valley. Taking a long, quiet walk in the open scenery of the Blue Ridge Mountains always helps us reflect and refocus, even if it’s just for a day. Plus, cooler temperatures means one of us can carry Nolan in a pack without ending up drenched in sweat – a big, big plus.

We can all agree that the weather in fall is what we long for in the summer. But the days are a bit shorter, so our favorite activity is to pack up the boys and head to Sandy Spring Adventure Park, which is truly the most amazing ropes course you can imagine. It tires out my kids, makes them feel confident and gives us a workout too. One of my favorite advanced courses literally has a “spider web” that you have to jump off of a tall tree and grasp in mid air. My heart is beating just thinking about it! We get home and make a fire outside and eat s’mores. Best day ever.
