Falling for Alexandria

Big orange pumpkin with autumn leaves at sunset

Finally, we are starting to see the leaves change! Every year, we fall in love with autumn in Alexandria. Whether you’re new to the area or lived here for years, there is always something new to discover and appreciate around town. Make sure to get out and soak up our favorite fall festivities before the season changes and it gets too chilly!

Here in Old Town, we have Captain’s Row, Jones Point Park, Founders Park, and the gorgeous trees that line our Old Town streets to see the leaves colored in orange, red, and yellow. Take a stroll down the cobblestone and brick lanes to see some festive door decor and plump pumpkin stacks. Taking a drive down the parkway or trip up past Arlington Cemetery will give you a taste of fall foliage along with the reflection of the Potomac River. If you’re looking for a bigger adventure, take a trip down to Shenandoah National Park or drive down the Blue Ridge Parkway.

This summer has been a special experiment for the 100 block of King Street. Since the pedestrian-only area was such a hit with local and visiting diners, The Alexandria City Council voted to keep the block’s restaurant-zone closed off to traffic through March 2021! Opening the area for open-air dining to expand comfort to diners was key in assisting our local businesses through pandemic closures. Now, Alexandria officials are looking into winterizing these restaurants’ street expansions while balancing a comfortable experience and safe distancing.

Although shorter days of sunlight will continue till the end of the year, soon we can look forward to the King Street trees lighting up as we approach November. This season, find a new way to enjoy a favorite restaurant, walk along the park paths to see a new side of the Potomac, or discover a new activity to add to family traditions and memories. Whatever your plans may be, enjoy them! This season is such a special time in our town, and there are so many things to do even through pandemic changes. Take some time to soak it in and enjoy the little things.
