fall kick-off…in the heat

It is hard to think about fall clothing when you’re in your shorts…sweating. But it is coming. Fall is one of my favorite times of the year in this area, and I can’t wait to feel that chill in the air (read: wear my boots, jackets and scarves).

I have started to add fall pieces to my clients‘ wardrobes and reworking some of their existing pieces for cooler temperatures. I got together last week with one of my favorite local women who happens to be a past client — the talented, health- and fitness-savvy Alicia Sokol. She is the woman behind the popular food blog Weekly Greens that has fueled many a fast, healthy meal in my own home. Most recently, she has launched her own Barre3 studio on 14th Street in DC.

If you are itching to get your fall wardrobe season off the ground, here are a few items you can put on your early-fall shopping list that will work in the early September heat and early October chill.

Think Romance
We recently worked on a Neo-Victorian fall spread for Northern Virginia Magazine that is out on stands now. That dark romance trend is big this fall whether it is in Victorian brocade, Spanish ruffles or English baroque — as Alicia is wearing here.

Alicia: “When I’m not in the studio, I gravitate towards solid neutrals (greys, navy, brown) and accent my look with fun jewelry or a pop of bright color, like a bold necklace or an orange belt. The color (of the dress) is warm, which I loved, and the pattern was bold without being busy. If I wear pattern it has to work to my advantage!”

Go Short
Hemlines are creeping up! After multiple seasons of talking women into midis, we are seeing shorter skirts and dresses coming back. Great in this heat and perfect with tights and boots once weather cools, leggings and even over flares!

Shades of Grey
I always feel funny saying, “Grey is big this season!” in the fall because…isn’t it always? But it is. Again. Whether you decide to wear the same shade head-to-toe or combine different tones of grey in a single look, the color is a must this season. I particularly love it for accessories, which feel a bit more unexpected than brown.

“I love shoes, but after I fractured an ankle a year ago, my footwear has become a bit less adventurous–more support and closer to the ground. It’s a good thing there are plenty of cute flat shoes out there like these AGLs!”

Alicia is wearing a dress from Kiskadee. The bag, boots and necklace are from The Shoe Hive.
