Extensions 101

As we head towards fall our hair is screaming for attention in every way possible. In previous articles we have talked about trendy colors and how to keep your hair healthy (in between salon visits), but today we’re going in-depth on hair extensions. There are many different types of extensions, so let’s talk about the pros and cons of the three most popular types: tape-in extensions, sew-in extensions, and clip-in extensions.

First, extensions are strands of hair, which can be real or synthetic, added on to your own hair to give a temporary appearance of thicker and longer hair. They are a great enhancement tool if you want to have a glam look for a night out on the town or for a special event. Out of the three main types, the most asked about are tape-in extensions, so we’ll start there.

Tape-In Extensions

Who are tape-in extensions for? Anyone can use tape-in extensions as they are designed to work with just about any hair type. The idea of a tape-in is to be a longer-lasting temporary enhancement. However, the “tape” is an adhesive, which should not be harsh on the hair after one use, but frequent use of tape-in extensions could lead to hair damage, even hair loss if not properly treated and taken out. Tape-in extensions look great and have a natural feel to them, but we recommend be very mindful when considering them. Be sure to consult with your stylist to make sure your hair is a good candidate for tape-in extensions.

Clip-In Extensions

Clip-in extensions are a great alternative to tape-ins and are one of my personal favorites. Clip-ins come in many different textures and colors and are the safest form of extensions because they are attached by hair clips. It takes only about five minutes to put them in and even less time to take them out, without any stylist assistance. Clip-ins are not meant for permanent use and are put in daily. High quality clip-in extension brands should last for a year. Consult with your stylist about the best brand of clip-ins. The only warning that comes to mind about clip-ins is to be careful because they can be addicting!

Sew-In Extensions

Lastly, we will talk about sew-in extensions. Many people have the idea that this is a form of extensions only for textured hair, but it’s actually a technique that can be used for many hair textures. One caveat is if you have fine hair then the style may not have the same longevity as it does for someone with textured hair. As the name implies, sew-ins are added using a needle and thread. Sew-in extensions provide a versatile way to transform your look.

These are just a few ideas to enhance your hair with extensions for your day-to-day look or a big event. Please don’t hesitate to stop by Bazzak for more information or all the latest and greatest hair necessities!
