the dish on rompers (and jumpsuits)

Martha: I love rompers, but I have never found one that looks great on me. Are there certain body types that should avoid them?

Tara, Zoe Boutique: Rompers and jumpsuits come in all different designs and styles. The best advice I could give is to try them on. You will never get a good feel for what it may look like on you if you don’t try it before you buy it. When looking for the right fit, consider these few points.

Is it the right fit and size? Never purchase a skintight romper or jumpsuit. An ill-fitting garment will really accentuate the areas of imperfection that you don’t want to show. Many can be cinched at the waist, so make sure that it is not fitting too tight around the derriere. Keep in mind, just like any other item of clothing, the number size does not matter. If you need to go up a size to ensure the right fit, do it. No one knows what size it is except for you.

Details and Embellishments. If you have a pear shape or more of a boyish figure, try a romper with some details or embellishments on top to balance out your body. For a pear shape, colorblocking with the darker color on the bottom and brighter color on the top to draw the eye upward to the face. If you have a boyish figure, play with ruffles around the neck or a flare at the bottom.

Cinch It. If you are lucky enough to have an hourglass figure you definitely want to show it off. Many rompers cinch in at the waistline with a drawstring. Giving definition to your waist will highlight a curvaceous body. If you happen to have more of an apple shape, don’t fret. Cinching will actually give you a defined waistline, thus giving you the curves you want.

Short or Long. Length is definitely a factor when wearing a romper. If you happen to be petite, stick with a romper that is above the knee. Anything too long will just make you look shorter. If you happen to have the gift of height or even just average height and plan to wear a nice heel, try a long floor length jumpsuit. This will give you a beautiful long and lean look.

Remember, try it on before you buy it. Stop in at Zoe and try our Elva short romper by Trina Turk, which has sleeves for those who don’t care to bare their arms. For the long lean look stop by Kiskadee and try on their Lilly Pulitzer Kourtney Strapless Jumpsuit or The Shoe Hive for a casual jumpsuit from their new Sundry line.
