designers at home: welcome baby jude!

Last week we welcomed a very special new member into the Ivy Lane Family! Our design assistant, Mikell, had a precious little boy, Jude Townsend Rice. As you might expect, this means we have babies on the brain, making this the perfect time to share some nursery design inspiration with all of you.

When Mikell first started planning for a nursery, she knew that she wanted to stick with versatile pieces that would easily transition if her family continued to grow. The first thing she picked was Cowtan and Tout’s One Hundred Acre Wallpaper, which is inspired by Winnie the Pooh. This choice created a fun yet neutral backdrop that will be perfect for any baby or child’s room in the future.

After finding the perfect backdrop, the obvious next step was furnishing the room. Mikell and her husband chose neutrals, rather than gender specific pieces, that would carry their family through their next child. She started with a classic white crib and added color through blankets and pillows. For the larger pieces in a baby’s room, we believe you can never go wrong with neutrals that will adapt for a growing family. You can always use linens or accessories to add a special touch, like Counting Sheep Mobile shown here. And, of course, we love a custom linens or bed skirt to transform the feel of the room.

The other nursery “essentials” we suggest are a comfy chair for late nights and a stylish case piece for storage and changing. A swivel in a durable fabric works beautifully for seating in a nursery and can be used throughout your home as your family evolves. Likewise, a good-looking dresser is never a bad investment and will continue to be useful for extra storage no matter where it’s moved.

We’ve also included a few cute (albeit less necessary) additions here – pieces that add layers and personality to the space. The scalloped pendant makes a major impact in the room. While new lighting may seem like a splurge for a nursery, a piece like this one could potentially light up a myriad of spaces (think guest bedroom, entryway, or dining room). Additionally, the feather mirror and driftwood stool/side table are pieces that add serious design value, but won’t break the bank. They will also transition easily into a child’s or teenager’s room for continued use.
