Color Theory: Summertime Blues

Did you know that studies show that blue photos get more likes on Instagram, blue crayons are the most popular, and blue rooms foster creativity?  As America’s most popular color, blue’s different hues evoke specific feelings when viewed. Nature’s color for sky and sea, blue creates a sense of calmness and relaxation and is considered beneficial for the mind and body.  Blue is a color that seeks peace and tranquility and promotes both physical and mental relaxation.

Think about it — we certainly feel a sense of calm if we lie on our backs and look into a bright blue cloudless sky or look out into the horizon beyond the blue sea. The paler the blue, the more freedom and calmness we feel. So it makes sense that each year blue emerges as the unofficial color of summer, a season when we (try to) slow down, rest and recharge, and often spend time outdoors near water.

Whether the fabric is cotton, denim, or linen that is marbled, striped, or faded, Kiskadee has a selection of clothing and accessories in different hues of blue to work into your weekend and workday style.

Camo and Curves:  The layering on this muted BCBG blue stretch jersey dress is like camouflage, especially for a pear shape, and is extremely flattering. The fitted underlay skims your curves and provides a nice line while the outer layer moves with your body.

Print Perfect:  Though I don’t typically don’t wear a lot of prints, I like the Southwestern feel that the print on the dress evokes. The significant stretch in the material and its A- line silhouette provide ultimate comfort. Easily accessorized, it also doesn’t wrinkle! Perfect for throwing into an overnight bag for a weekend getaway.

Flattering Florals:  The summer floral, done slightly differently with a flattering neckline and full skirt, is the perfect dress for spending an evening indoors given the full sleeve. It will also transition nicely into D.C.’s traditionally warm fall season. The block heel, ties, and studs on the sandal gives a slightly edgy look.

Work and Beyond:  The darker hue of this blue A-line swing dress is perfect for a more casual work environment. The burnout floral fabric lends some interest to an otherwise classis silhouette. Paired with a contrasting color tassel necklace and sandals or wedges, this dress is a versatile summer staple.

Summer Soirée:  Made of a light, almost airy fabric, this dress is perfect when you’re looking for something a little dressier but want to be comfortable and cool, too. Admittedly, this dress was out of my comfort zone, but once I tried it I could see how it’s the perfect solution for a soirée on the hottest of summer days. Dressed up with a statement bracelet and ring you are party ready!

      Hey Chelsea!
The last dress was really different- as you can see it’s quite voluminous on the bottom but the more fitted top and the tie at the waist balance it out.The V neckline is somewhat sexy, too! This is one of those dresses that on a hanger you might pass by but on a woman’s body is very flattering.

My preference would be a higher heel with this to balance out the volume on the bottom. I think you can do a block heel or even a higher, narrower heel as long as the shoe is open. I think a closed toe pump with this would look too heavy. The material, though, was super soft and so light- very airy. If you could “whip” a fabric I think it would turn into this. Also, the material has a natural wrinkle to it, and that’s part of the look, so I would say the dress doesn’t really wrinkle. It’s really perfect for a hot afternoon or evening event and can easily be dressed up. I was in Kiskadee a few days ago and I know there are a few still left in the store!
