cocktail hour with coco blanca

Happy hour is great, but regular 5 o’clock specials at your local watering hole can often times be uneven affairs winding up at best unorganized and unpredictable.

If Churchill drank to make others better looking and Hemingway drank to make them more interesting, it makes it that much more important to know how to throw a proper cocktail hour so you can ensure that you are the best looking and most interesting hostess your guests have ever encountered.

There was a time, (the 1960s) that hemlines and gender roles were prescribed but you were free to choose the Manhattan, Sloe Gin Fizz, mixed cocktails and mixed company in a relaxed atmosphere and style somewhere between friendly and flirty, formal and functional. And as much as we enjoy drinking while the sun is still up, it is unfortunate that our culture has eschewed the mid 20th century magic and style of cocktail hour for two-for-one domestics at the wing joint.

Because cocktail hour isn’t technically an hour or really even a set amount of time, it’s a mood, an experience, a mini party after a tough day at the office to connect with friends and loved ones. And of course drinking your stress away, but with significantly more glitz and a lot more glamour.

So to throw a proper cocktail hour you need of course a venue, assorted liquors, mixers, a cocktail book, a good bar set, and the perfect cocktail dress to compliment your already fabulous and glamorous guests. If Coco were to host a cocktail hour in her home, she would rely on this classic bar set, dry vermouth and this book of classic cocktails Tequila Mockingbird. And in our opinion she would probably serve “A Cocktail of Two Cities”.
