ask stylebook: yoga at home?

Stephanie: Sometimes I don’t have time to get to the studio for a yoga class, but I don’t know where to start with my home practice. Do you have any suggestions?

Laura, Mind the Mat: Don’t feel the need to come up with a whole complicated sequence like your teacher would. Just try to move the body a little, so perhaps start with some cat / cow spine stretches, and work your way through some sun salutations. A good strength builder for your core and and arms is simply going into downward dog and bringing your knee to your nose, as close as possible, holding it there for a breath and then swinging it back. Try that a few times on both sides. End with a forward fold and hamstring stretch to calm down your body and your breath.
