Ask Stylebook: Can I Wear Black and Still Look Summer-y?

As much as we like playing with bold summery colors, it’s near impossible to avoid the urge to throw on basic black pieces—even during the hottest months of the year. The darkest shade in the book gets a bad reputation for not being summer-appropriate, but the trick to wearing black in the summer is all in the style and fabrics you choose.

black_linen_pantsIf you’re wearing a black leather jacket and leggings to an outdoor summer concert you might as well book an appointment at a sauna…no need to suffer(cate, ha!). Linen pants, whether white or black, are perfect for the occasion!  Open, airy, and light you will stay cool as the lights dim.  Pair with a sophisticated top, and you will radiate simple elegance for the entire evening.

black_work_dressAlso, there is no reason for black to be blah!  We know there are those who adore the ease of an all-black wardrobe.  However, remove the moody gothic vibe and have fun with this neutral!  This black and white botanical print is a sleek silhouette with an added optical illusion.  Dress down with Jack Roger Jellies or throw on heels and a white linen blazer for the perfect, chic, work ensemble.

Black_LBDNo story regarding fashion and the color black is complete without discussing the LBD.  We can’t live without it but we can kick it up a notch! This dress by Glam is simply stunning.  The loose silhouette is accentuated by a free, flowing cape…a little detail for maximum flair!  Or add a color and break the rules! The white and black block dress with spaghetti straps is perfect for cocktail hour and more.  Bonus? Added fringe elevates the dress from simple chic to on trend.

Angelina Jolie looks stunning in her constant all black wardrobe but we are too individualistic to mimic others.  Have fun adding pops of color, prints, jewelry to this staple color…black will play well with others all season long!
