An Alternative for Cinco de Mayo When Your Favorite Restaurants Are Booked

Los Cuates, Don Taco, and Los Tios all booked for Cinco de Mayo? Or wondering what to do until your plans to get margaritas with your best friends start later on in the day? Good news, ladies and gentlemen: Meggrolls has a special for you.

Newly opened on N. Fayette Street in the former Five Guys building, Meggrolls is home to some of the most wonderfully and uniquely packaged comfort foods to ever grace Old Town. Do not come here to eat healthy. Come here when you are ready to indulge. Your body will forgive you because these are 100 percent worth it, and you can eat something green—perhaps guacamole and a lime margarita—later on!

Meggrolls are wonton-wrapped delicacies that run a wide range of flavors. Choose from the classic Big Megg (the owners’ take on the burger), the Chicken Parm (yes. Just yes.), the Buffalo Wing (also yes), the 4-Cheese Broccoli Mac (again, yes), the Chorizo Poblano (festive!), and the Gyro (didn’t try, but probably yes). Pair your Meggrolls with some roughage: Megg and Alex, the owners, offer an original variety, which is the most popular, as well as a Caesar Slaw and a Cilantro-Ranch. The menu also includes a crowd-pleasing White Bean Chicken Chili, topped with the Cilantro-Ranch slaw, and boardwalk fries. Soon to come, but delayed so as to ensure the perfection that Megg’s fan following has come to expect, are Key Lime and Chocolate Silk personal Megg Pies.  Refreshments include Porch Pounder and Underwood canned wines (a can just feels better paired with a Meggroll) and an assortment of beers and sodas.

Meggrolls got its start through a much-beloved food truck, which rapidly accrued such an enthusiastic following that a brick-and-mortar expansion just made sense. This restaurant is their first such endeavor and has been, in co-owner Alex’s words (and in our experience when we stopped by) “really busy” and “supported by the community.” It has been reviewed favorably, and more than once, by the Washingtonian, and was also mentioned in Southern Living. In April of last year, it won the People’s Choice Award at the 14th annual Carpenter’s Cook-off at the Carpenter’s Shelter. So, it’s kind of a big deal.

Stop by during happy hour from 4-6pm today for Cinco de Mayo beer specials, a Chorizo Poblano Meggroll, and some Cilantro-Ranch slaw. Best Cinco de Mayo ever.
